Kamasi Washington is quite literally a legend in the making. Backed by his 10-piece band, 32-piece orchestra, and 20-person choir, Kamasi’s release of the nearly three-hour-long, double-sided album The Epic has put this saxophonist as the torch-bearer of modern, experimental, improvisation-based music. Since the release of this award-winning album, Kamasi has released an EP entitled Harmony of Difference, and a full-length album, Heaven and Earth.
Last Monday, Washington brought his tunes to Meow Wolf and I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that everyone there felt a sense of transcendence at the show. From two of the best drummers I’ve ever seen, to a bassist who rocked the house, to the keys player that I could muster only one word for while watching, “Wow!.” Every member of Kamasi Washington’s band are some the of the best musical talents working in the industry today. They take his concepts of music further than most are willing to go and I, for one, am excited to witness Kamasi Washington’s journey to becoming the next great horn player of our time.
