Stacked All Local Lineup Slated for Fox Theatre This Weekend (07/06)

This Friday, July 6th, the Fox Theatre will host some of Colorado's finest.

Ashley Koett sounds like Mac Demarco and Ella Fitzgerald made a band and Cuco produced the record. That said, the Boulder artist's combination of slack rock and jazz with "memorizing melodies" is exactly how you want to spend your Friday night this week. We promise.

Flanked by a four-piece band live, Koett is the singer and multi-instrumentalist behind most of her recorded work, which she creates in her Boulder bedroom. She's "not afraid to get personal in her songs" and often "even makes light of her dreary situations" in her music. With a roster opening for bands like Cuco and Frankie Cosmos, it's honestly hard to imagine Koett will remain local for long, which is just another reason this weekend's Fox show should be on your to-do list .

Tyto AlbaCorsicanaAmerican Grandma, and The Milk Blossoms will also grace the stage on Friday. Tyto Alba's female-fronted indie rock vibes mixed with Corsicana's shoegaze is already reason to show up early. But then you add in the shadowy post-rock sounds of American Grandma and the dark pop productions of The Milk Blossoms and well, you'd better just show up at doors. Honestly. (By the way, they're are at 830PM.)

KGNU Community RadioRadio 1190, and Twist & Shout Records are presenting this all-local lineup of stacked proportions and tickets are only $10 in advance. Get yours here and we'll see you at the show.

Denver Artist Sam Hozdulick Is Ready to Dance You Awake

By: Jura Daubenspeck

Sam Hozdulick lets her music speak for itself.

BLDGBLKS Artist Sam Hozdulick.

BLDGBLKS Artist Sam Hozdulick.

BLDGBLKS artist Sam Hozdulick has been playing music since age 12. Upon moving from her Texas home to Denver, Sam’s sole mission has been to perform music. The LGBT singer/songwriter made her start playing in local coffee shops and monthly charity benefits at Charlie’s Denver. Her big break came from her first of now three appearances at Denver PrideFest.

With a 2013 debut acoustic EP titled Music Speaks, as well as two hit songs, “Good Thing (feat. Hypnautic)” and “Diamond on the Floor,” which also has a music video, her upcoming debut album Awake is sure to be nothing less than fantastic.

Awake delivers powerful words that are woven within catchy and smooth rhythms. Sam’s beautiful voice, and the relatability of her songs, makes it feel like she is singing directly to you. One of my favorite tracks is "Crazy," in which Sam asks the question many of us undoubtedly relate to, “Hey baby, where did you hide your crazy?”

For Sam, music is an incredibly personal experience. She transcends the notion of producing merely catchy tunes, and uses her voice to make connections with her audience. When asked about the album, Sam shared:

“This album is truly about my awakening. I went from a shy singer/songwriter to someone who has started gaining full confidence in not only my music, but in my worth. I think that's what young women need. I think people in general need to see that confidence doesn't come from others, it comes from your dreams, your passion, your failures, and your mistakes. That's really what I want to show through my music.”

My favorite aspect about the album is that no track sounds like the other. "When I’m Gone" and "Down" are acoustic-focused jams, while "Forbidden Fruit" and "Time Bomb" cater to a more pop/electronic palate. Each song varies in tone and allows Hozdulick to showcase her vocal range. A great album is like a solid tapas tray-- it includes a variety of delicious treats that can be enjoyed individually, but when experienced as a whole, it leaves one feeling totally satisfied. Awake is one such album.

Awake will officially be released January 29th through all digital media retailers, including iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, and YouTube. There will also be physical copies available at all of Sam’s upcoming performances and in music stores including: Twist and Shout Records and Angelo’s CDs & More in Denver, and Albums on the Hill in Boulder.

Sam at her blush and blu performance.

On Saturday, December 12th, Sam performed at Denver’s Blush & Blu. The pre-release/variety show included live music, burlesque and drag performers. The performers danced and lip-synched to Sam’s album, and Sam also performed a few crowd favorites. The show was in honor of Sam’s Kickstarter supporters, and she thanked them by rewarding them with merch packages and early access to her music.

So get in on the action and be sure to check out Sam’s new website, where you can purchase her music and merchandise!
