Premiere: Denver's Boot Gun Debuts with a Bang with Two Singles & a New Music Video

Denver’s Boot Gun have entered the Colorado music scene with a serious bang. Today, the three-piece are releasing their debut single and video for “Virginia,” a high-energy rock’n’roll track with a Southern twang, and a rebellious video featuring a slew of Denver haunts to match. And folks, one thing’s for sure, the trio comprised of Keith Lawrence (guitar/vocals), Davie Landry (bass/vocals), and Cody Hart (drums), have brought the party.

“Virginia” was recorded and mixed by Todd Divel (The Yawpers, In The Whale, The Velveteers) of Silo Sound and mastered by Hans Liburd of Burdhouse Mastering. The video was directed and filmed by Colin Anders of Slice Cinematics (Nathaniel Rateliff & The Nightsweats, A Shadow of a Jaguar, Dragondeer). Boot Gun also featured several friends on the track’s instrumentals including Bullfrog Baugh on harmonica, who makes an appearance in the video about 40 seconds in, Sam Janik on guitar, and Bill McKay on organ and piano.

Says frontman Keith Lawrence about the track, "Virginia came to me in multiple dreams last summer. I showed the boys the main riff and they said ‘Sounds great. Where's the rest of the song?' I told 'em I had to go back to sleep to hear [and] see the rest of it. A few months and a couple of disco naps later, we had us a rock’n’roll ripper."

A ripper it is indeed. “Virginia” is a boot-stompin’ tune rife with slashing rips, harmonica twang, and a jangly toe-tappin’ keys solo that will force you on your feet. Some of that energy didn’t enter the track until the boys rounded things out in the studio though.

Says Keith, “As a band, we all believe that a song isn't finished being written until we record it. Todd at Silo pushed for certain creative ideas that we were able to let shine on these tracks. Having Bill McKay sit in on keys helped round out the sound and bring our musical intention into fruition."

Along with “Virginia” and their debut music video, Boot Gun also released their B side “Feels Like A Storm” today. While “Virginia” takes you on a wild ride, quite literally in the video, “Feels Like A Storm” is the moodier, heavy-hitting track from the trio.

Says Davie, “‘Storm’ is a song that we wrote collectively. It started with Keith singing but never felt completely right. So we argued and laughed, and laughed and argued, and I was forced to sing it… In the end, it became the beast that you're listening to today."

Demi Demitro Of The Velveteers Told Us About All The Eerie Inspirations Behind Their New Record

Velveteers frontwoman Demi Demitro reflects on the band’s debut EP, their roots, and what’s on the horizon for this young duo who are already making their mark on the scene.

The only way to get to the stage at the Hi-Dive, a small punk rock venue on South Broadway in Denver, is through the crowd. There’s no door or curtain onstage where the musicians emerge from, dressed in black, wearing leather and ivory boots. Instead, they’re reminded of the tightness, the body heat, precariously shaking drinks, and shallow breaths of the crowd before they come onstage. This didn’t stop The Velveteers from making a grand entrance to their release show for their debut EP on February 9th.

Instead of simply getting onstage, setting up, and starting their set, the band, fronted by Demi Demitro on vocals and guitar, carried in rhythm by her brother John, and aided by their third drummer and relatively new addition Noah Shomberg (who also plays with The Yawpers), set their gear in place and stepped back into the crowd only to confidently re-emerge onto the stage like three rock stars playing the O2 Academy.

This infectious, rock‘n’roll bravado isn’t something the band picked up along the way. It’s been there since the start. Their intense, convicted aesthetic and sonic identity has already brought on huge accomplishments for a band their age. They’ve toured the UK with Deap Valley, playing to massive crowds, played motorcycle festivals in Joshua Tree with sound by Hutch, Queens of the Stone Age’s longtime sound engineer, and they’ve had vinyl pressed of their newest album at the Third Man Records factory in Detroit. Each of these accomplishments spawned from their time spent as a centerpiece in the Colorado and Midwestern DIY scenes.

“Some of our favorite shows we’ve ever played have been at DIY venues. The people in that scene are really genuine, they’re not trying to rip you off, and they’re there to listen. What they do [for younger bands] is important, because I know it shaped who I am as a musician,” frontwoman Demi Demitro said over tea at the Yellow Deli, one of her favorite Boulder haunts.

There’s an energy to seeing The Velveteers play. Onstage, the band occupies a tangent world of pointed shoes, glitter jackets, bones, and candles. It’s like hair metal if it were born out of Dracula or The Nightmare Before Christmas instead of big hair, zebra print, and leather pants.

“A lot of the inspiration we have for our band comes from places other than music. I’m really inspired by Tim Burton, Walt Disney, and Andy Warhol. The Walt Disney version of Snow White has this gothic-ness to it, and that’s something that really inspired our album,” she said.

The theatrics of these non-musical influences leave a lasting impression. The band’s merch table looks like a séance just took place, adorned with candles and skulls. The face of the band’s new album shows them with blacked out eyes and upside down crosses on their foreheads. Demitro even claimed that a chunk of the album was written in a graveyard.

“When [the song ‘Death Hex’] came out, I had all these Wiccans and Pagans following me around asking me if I was a witch. It’s a metaphor-- I don’t really mean it,” she said, laughing.

The immediate fear with a band like The Velveteers is that they’re all show. One listen to their debut self-titled EP sends that assumption into the dust. Finding a loud, irresistible, and cryptic balance between the spacious grit of Queens of the Stone Age, the pummeling, percussive thunder of The White Stripes and The Dead Weather, and the sheer lightening of Iggy Pop and the Stooges, the band has crafted a presence built on their own unique visual bravado guided by thundering, melodic songs that aren’t easily forgotten.

The EP, recorded mostly live and to tape at Silo Sound Studios in Denver, CO over the past year opens with “Just Like The Weather,” a driving, aggressive cut that places Demi’s tectonic, rhythm-heavy guitar playing and vast vocal range to the forefront, as the band occupies a musical storm that viciously encircles you until the words have found a way into your veins. The band’s songs have a habit of doing this, often effortlessly. They’re written with emotional sincerity and performed with bombastic assertion.

“When I write, it’s almost like being in a daze. [Sometimes it feels like] I’m not really there when I’m writing, which is this magical feeling. I got that feeling with every song on the album,” Demitro said.

“Anastasia Sings” is another song that takes you for a ride. With a piercing scream kicking things off, the track features some of the band’s most dynamic guitar playing yet, which reaches a jagged crescendo following the chorus.

“[That’s] another one of my favorite tracks [on the album]. That one was really inspired by Iggy Pop, ‘cause I had seen him live with the Post Pop Depression band,” Demitro said.

The band doesn’t lock themselves into a specific sound, though. In similar fashion to their haunting, non-album single “This Love Lasted,” “Darling Beloved” takes the album in a cryptically stripped-back direction.

“I did ‘Darling Beloved’ in one take. Vocals, guitar, everything. That song is really special to us, because it was completely in the moment. One of my favorite parts of going into the studio is when stuff like that happens, and in no way will you ever be able to recreate it,” she continued.

The stripped-back, horrorshow “Darling Beloved” and it’s stylistic sibling “This Love Lasted” aren’t currently fixtures in the band’s live set. Instead, their performances rely on roaring guitar, clamorous drums, and a fuzz that hits you right in the chest. The band doesn’t use a bass player, so Demi Demitro’s guitar playing has evolved into a versatile and rhythmic barrage that covers the low end, high end, and everything in between. The band is a sound to be reckoned with live; they pull the audience straight into their world of dark, irresistible magnetism.

In promotion of their debut, the band recently embarked on a two-week national tour in promotion of the record, have more dates in the works for the rest of the year, and are also set to play an unofficial showcase at SXSW in Austin, TX this March. Listening to their album and seeing them live leaves the impression that this is what the band was working towards all along: a sold-out release show for a triumphant debut record, a national tour (with many more shows to come), and a spot at one of the most popular musical festivals in the nation. Despite all appearances and affirmations of success, this is only the beginning for this band, and if their start is any indication, what’s to follow will be all whirlwind, heat, and flash.

Review: Great American Taxi's Latest Record Is Colorado Rugged

Recently re-formed band, Great American Taxi dropped an album earlier this year: Dr. Feel Good’s Traveling Medicine Show. The record is both refreshingly eclectic and simultaneously reminiscent of classic American sounds. The album covers a full range of styles from Americana, to country-rock and classic rock, all the way to R&B. Although there is a diversity of genres within, the album stays true to the tradition of Colorado bands that have preceded GAT. The record contains plenty of dance-inducing country roadhouse bounces with songs like “We Can Run” and “Out On the Town,” yet it still has down-tempo classic rock-style songs like “Sunshiny Day,” which make this an album with a song for every type of fan.

Well-produced and a polished project due to the hard work of Chad Staehly (keyboard/vocals), Jim Lewin (guitar/vocals), Brian Adams (bass/vocals) and Arthur Lee Land (guitar/banjo/vocals), and featuring guest drummer Duane Trucks (Hard Working Americans, Widespread Panic), this record plays as a rugged, feel-good ode to the Colorado lifestyle. With the production of Railroad Earth’s Tim Carbone at Silo Sound Studios in Denver, CO, Dr. Feel Good’s Traveling Medicine Show is definitely worth a spin.

Great American Taxi are currently on a national tour in support of the new record, with an upcoming can’t-miss-it show at Red Rocks this Thursday, May 25th, where they will be covering some good ol’ Grateful Dead tracks before Film On The Rocks' Long Strange Trip. Brooklyn's A Shadow of Jaguar Release New Music Video For "Keep On Knocking"

This past fall, Boulder, CO rock duo A Shadow of Jaguar made the move to New York. Now based in Brooklyn, members Brian Hubbert (lead vocals/slide guitar/bass) and Andrew Oakley (drums/vocals) actually laid down several tracks before their Colorado departure at Denver’s Silo Studios back in 2015. One of these tracks, “Keep on Knocking,” is a tune originally written and recorded in 1976 by pronto-punk band Death. The track itself was not released until 2009, and now, ASOJ have put their own spin on the rock’n’roll hit “as an homage to America’s rock pioneers.”

Just last week, A Shadow of Jaguar dropped an accompanying music video for their version of “Keep on Knocking.” The video features shots of the duo gallivanting around several Boulder hometown haunts, including The Fox Theatre, Dot’s Diner, and The No Name Bar, where Whiskey Autumn’s Matty Schelling actually makes a short cameo appearance. These scenes are interspersed with action shots of a lady friend rocking out, skateboarders, and an ASOJ live performance. Television Generation's New EP Fuchsia + Their Move Into the Denver Music Scene

Will Hayden (vocals/guitar), Katy Johnson (bass), and Anthony Elio (drums) split from Boulder for the Denver area after their respective exits from CU, where Television Generation came to be. That was in 2012, when the EDM scene was exclusively big in Boulder and there was little wiggle room in the music scene for a punk rock presence.

"I think Boulder has a problem with being a transient kind of place,” said Hayden. “Tons of people go [there] for college; these people come and most of them go. People just move away. And a lot of the bands that we saw pop up when we were in college are no longer active.”

TVG set their sights on the Denver scene and recorded their first EP If Only I Had A Brain with Mammoth Cave Recording Studios in 2013. After some feedback from producer Lance Bendiksen (The Fray), Hayden and Elio broke out the metronome and put more hours into mastering their ’60s pop, ’90s grunge, alt rock energy. Johnson joined TVG a few months after the band released their second EP Digital Static (2015), a release that includes a track called “Space Invaders” mixed by Jack Endino from Nirvana.

A year later, Television Generation has released their third EP Fuchsia with Todd Divel of Silo Sound Recording Studio in Denver. Hayden says they went into their first session thinking that they would only have time to lay down one or two tracks. But the result was an EP’s worth of tunes recorded over the course of just a few hours. It could have been the Simpsons references exchanged between TVG and Divel that kept things grooving. Or it could have just been, as Johnson said, “We were having a really good day.”

Fuchsia operates on a sliding scale between garage rock, post-punk, super punk, (if that were legitimate genre) and alt rock. Television Generation told me they drew inspiration for this release from The Beatles, The Who and most notably, Sonic Youth. Johnson employs a Kim Gordon-esque style on Fuchsia by creating a lot of garage rock noise and manipulating the distortion and delay pedals to produce all kinds of uncomfortable, yet totally satisfying feedback in the middle of pop songs.

Back on the subject of the Denver scene, Hayden said that when Johnson joined the group, the trio started checking out other punk acts, which has become a huge support system for TVG.

“That’s what a music scene is and should be.” said Hayden.

Branching out from Boulder to Denver allowed TVG to not only meet talented bands, but to get a sense of the quality of the younger bands popping up from all over the place.

“The flux of people to Colorado probably helps because there's a lot of fresh blood out here and they're looking for places to play, and that's kind of what I was saying about Boulder [being transient],” said Hayden. “There are a lot of people coming in from out of state obviously for the weed and all that, and a lot of people see it as a bad thing, but I think it's really good for the music [scene]. It brings in a lot of fresh, excited people and I think that’s what we haven’t seen in years past: that excitement in people finding local bands. There’s enough talent and enough people interested, so let's blow it up as much as we can.”

TVG thinks that these trends in the Denver music scene will only continue to soar.

“We could make Denver the new Seattle.” Hayden added, with enough conviction in his voice that the possibility could someday be true.

This Sunday, November 6th, Television Generation will ‘Rock Against Trump’ at Seventh Circle Music Collective with an anti-Trump CD release show, featuring a whole laundry list of bands in the Denver punk scene. Evan Holm & The Restless Ones have managed to produce tracks that are silky smooth, soulful, and show a balanced maturity of gratifying writing and performance with “Good Old Days” and “Long Gone”. The reverb on these tunes is so comforting that it’s almost as though the alleviating effects of the music were made sonic. It is beautiful music. The group is releasing two new songs this week from the EP as well, "What I Know" and "You Are You".

Since “Good Old Days” and “Long Gone” were recorded live, we already have a sense of how tight the group is. It’s no surprise then that the five-piece have already played some major Denver gigs, and even had a UMS spot this summer.

Colorado's The Velveteers Release Debut Single + Music Video for Track "Death Hex"

Colorado rock duo The Velveteers released their first music video and single today for their original track, “Death Hex”. Recorded at Silo Sound Studios, the track features commanding vocals by frontwoman Demi Demitro over heavy guitar and a slammin’ rock’n’roll drumbeat courtesy of John Demitro.

Demi’s presence in the accompanying music video for “Death Hex” is as equally hypnotic as the single itself. In it, we enter a black and white world lit only by candles, and are hexed with prismatic visions of Demi playing in front of dual drummers in gothic makeup. Visions of Demi’s smile, eyes, and headbanging hair flash before us as if part of a spell.

Said Demi of the video, “‘Death Hex’ is about awakening from the dead and saying goodbye to the past. It was really inspired by a sense of magic I felt happening. It’s a story of coming back from a bad situation and coming out on the other side better than you ever imagined.”

Though The Velveteers have been around for a year and a half, “Death Hex” is the first music that they have actually recorded. They’ll be supporting the single, and showcasing a number of other original tunes, on their upcoming UK tour with California’s Deap Valley, and they’ve got more studio plans in the works as well.

Wilson Harwood: A Fall Tour, A Spring EP, & His Current Single "Saturated in Sunshine"

If you haven’t yet heard, local singer-songwriter Wilson Harwood just dropped a new single. And it’s tasty. Harwood’s “Saturated in Sunshine” opens with an easy-listening, beachy vibe that soon has you singing-along to its catchy, upbeat chorus. Harwood has managed to combine what feels like a smooth lullaby with a buoyant reminiscence of something lost; you can almost feel the warm tide rolling over your feet as his voice sweeps over drippy percussion and soft guitars. Just days after dropping it online, Harwood had his single release party featuring Pamela Machala and Cousin Curtiss, which was a huge success. So we wanted to catch up with him and hear more about his solo work (you may know him from Rocktin), what inspired him to write “Saturated in Sunshine,” and what his plans are for the fall. Read on:

So we know you have some involvement with Boulder-based Rocktin. Tell us about your venture into the solo world and what it has been like now creating from that perspective.

It is super fun to play with Rocktin and create music with so many collaborators. My new venture into the solo world was a bit daunting at first, but also pushed me in new directions musically. I have enjoyed writing for just banjo, guitar, and ukulele; I really like the challenge of playing with less instrumentation. Overall, it has been a lot of fun recording and performing with an array of different musicians in Boulder and playing to their individual strengths.

“Saturated in Sunshine” is so upbeat and positive. It even feels a bit beachy. What inspired this track?

It’s a bit ironic since the nearest beach is hundreds of miles away, but the song started as just an improvised recording session. I like to simply create for creation’s sake at times and “Saturated In Sunshine” was the result of doing just that. I think the chord progression came first, which inspired the beachy feel, but the idea of a couple falling out of love in paradise was a spur of the moment creation while recording some scratch lyrics. I like the irony of it feeling upbeat and positive, but having a heavy tinge of “down and out” as well.

That sort of play is definitely evident on the track. What was it like recording at The Hook Factory?

The Hook Factory is actually the name of my mixing engineer, Justin Peacock’s, company. He rents out space at Silo Sound Studios in Denver. It was very different from recording sessions I had done with Rocktin in the past where we had hours of tracking and several isolation booths. For “Saturated In Sunshine,” I just recorded the acoustic guitar over the production I had already made at home. I then overdubbed vocals on top of that and it was a wrap!

Sometimes simple is the best way to go. Speaking of- we love the pastel goodness that is your album art for this track. Was this something you created?

Thanks! Actually my talented friend Adrian Flynt made the artwork. He is the bass player in Rocktin and a great artist. We are also working together on the artwork for my next single, which will drop on 02/09/2016.

Very cool. So your single release party was an awesome success. Tell us what it was like putting together the lineup for that show with Pamela Machala and Cousin Curtiss. And what was your favorite part of that show?

The show was a ton of fun. I was very happy to have Pamela Machala on board and have always admired her songwriting. Cousin Curtiss was actually recommended to me by Shine’s booking manager. Once I saw that Curtiss was a looping artist, played great music, and traveled around in a tiny home, I knew I wanted to add him to the line up. My favorite part of the show was when I realized the audience was listening so intently that I had to pause and tell them it felt like I was performing to them in my living room. The show was a perfect mix of intimate listening tracks and danceable grooves.

Always a good combination. Talk to us about your plans this fall. Any more releases planned? Recording? Is a music video for “Saturated in Sunshine” in the works?

I am actually touring on “Saturated In Sunshine” around Colorado and New Mexico until January. Then, in February, I’ll be having my next single release party at Swallow Hill in Denver. I have all of my recordings finished and am currently having them mixed and mastered. So actually in May, I’ll release a five-song EP. And you know, I did make a music video for “Saturated In Sunshine,” but we didn’t release it. We wanted a slightly different aesthetic and production in the end. But keep an eye out for a music video for my next single in February!
