BolderBeat's Tiny Desk Contest Compilation + This Weekend's Shows to See

By: Hannah Oreskovich

You entered. We watched (and listened).

Hey Colorado! A lot of local acts have been working on something awesome the past couple of weeks- their submissions to NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest! As you probably know, NPR has a sweet feature called Tiny Desk, the brainchild of Bob Boilen, who is also the creator of All Songs Considered. Boilen essentially invites artists to play at his desk and their intimate performances are recorded live; often they’re really badass. Check out some of the most recent Tiny Desk performances here.

Last year, NPR started the Tiny Desk Contest, allowing any and every US artist to have a shot at getting an invite to play Boilen’s sought-after desk. The winner was Fantastic Negrito, who you can check out here. This year, the winner will play the Tiny Desk and also appear in a taping of NPR’s Ask Me Another and tour the US with NPR and Lagunitas. We kept seeing so many local band’s submissions pop up that we decided to throw them all in a feature for your viewing pleasure. We were impressed by everyone’s submissions and we're sure you will be too. So give these vids some traffic yo:

We’re getting excited to party with you + Whiskey Autumn, Villain Baritone, and Noctogon this Saturday at Studio 700 Boulder! Get your masks for the masquerade theme STAT and don’t forget to peep the deets in the FB event here. As we mentioned Monday in our Noctogon feature, local alt-power trio Villain Baritone put together the all-Boulder lineup for this event, and today we’re catching up with them! Comprised of Joshua Thomas (drums), Robert Spears (bass/keys) and Brent Wilkinson (vocals/guitar), our first feature on these dudes dropped shortly after they got together and jumped on the scene (eye that piece here). And boyyyy have they been busy since. Here’s our catch up:

Last time we chatted, you guys were actually in the process of laying down some tracks at Studio 700. Give us an update!

Brent: Well we’ve been working on polishing our live sound. We’ve sent our song “Vines” around, but other then that, we’ve just been rehearsing as much as we can and setting up our show.

Rob: We’ve got a full set; an hour long set, and the songs are really starting to take shape and fall into place.

12194553_679904975480465_6027986398661391089_o.jpg

Josh: [At the show Saturday] we’ll be playing 7 or 8 originals. We’ll play some covers too- we’ll be doing a Dr. Dog cover, a Black Keys song, Tracy Chapman…

Rob: And don’t forget Norman.

Josh: Oh right- Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky”.

Oh hell yeah! That sounds awesome.

Josh: We’ve also been playing with Andrew Sturtz, so for the show we’ll back him on a couple of his own [originals] and he’s gonna back us on some of ours too, which is the beginning stages of a possible mashup. Hunter Stone will make some stage appearances as well. [PS: We heard Sturtz has a No Name show tomorrow- click here for that info.]

Brent: Yeah it’s been fun working with them- they’re both talented and their material kind of compliments ours.

Sweet! Putting together a full set from scratch is workkk. What was that like?

Rob: When we first started our creative drive came from Brent’s songs- he had written them already and we sort of turned those into our own songs. But then- and I’ve never done this before- we started writing together, the three of us. It’s a difficult thing when you have different personalities and all three of us come from different places musically- Josh and I aren’t even on our first instruments either. But we really just started to click together as a trio. One day we sat down and were like, ‘Let’s write a song today’. We threw out different things- we wanted it to be dancy, to have a drive to it- and a couple of hours later the song was done! So what kind of started as a causal jam thing that we were doing at The Outback has become more.

Brent: Definitely. We’ve been playing together since the summer but the platform we’re at now is getting a feel for the process of the trio itself. It’s great and it’s night and day from what we started with.

Rob: Yeah I mean we’ve actually even thrown out a few songs because we’ve just moved on to bigger and better things. Out set list is pretty dynamic- I mean we go from 160BPM-

Josh: ...More like 180BPM.

Rob (laughs): Yeah like 180 BPM almost hard rock to like soul and jazz influences.

Brent: Yeah bringing in the tone of it all has been fun.

Well we are hardcore diggin’ said tones in “Vines” and we can’t wait for VB's set Saturday. Props on a sweet lineup dudes, and thanks for letting us be a part of the magic.

Come see Villain Baritone’s set at Studio 700 this Saturday! Join the FB event righhhht here. And if you missed them on the radio last Sunday as part of our Green Light Radio partnership (or even if you didn’t!) give their track “Vines” a listen below:

Radio Recap: Boulder Band Gingerslap! and their track "Stay the Same"

By: Hannah Oreskovich

GingerSlap! dropped a new single.

Heyo folks! As you may have read about last Monday on the site, we are partnering with Colorado Community Radio Network (CCRN), Green Light Radio, and Streetside Productions for a weekly artist feature live on Boulder’s 95.5 FM. That means every Sunday night between 9-10PM, we will be promoting one artist on Rocky Flats’ The Network. Andddd then every #MusicMonday, we’ll give you a recap on said artist + another chance to hear their song streaming on our site!

Want to send us a track yourself? Info on how to submit is below!

So let’s chat about last night’s artist:

Boulder-based rock outfit GingerSlap!’s single “Stay the Same” hit the groovy Boulder airwaves last evening. Comprised of Heather Nelson-Boger (vocals), Derek Hayes (guitar), Mike Waldhoff (drums), Mike Morrison (pedal steel), and JD Droddy (bass), this is what the five-piece wants you to know about them:

Every once in awhile there is a synergistic combination of people that produces something greater than the sum of the parts. This is one of those times. Other than our resident diva, Heather, there are no virtuosos in this band, just good players who mesh extraordinarily well. On paper it doesn't look like it would work: power pop guitarist, funky southern bassist, pedal steel and pop diva vocals. But it works, and the recombination of American musical roots yields a sound that defies the current trend of laser focused sub-genres.

Pretty sweet. When it comes to their track “Stay the Same”, GingerSlap! told us:

Everybody contributed to the arrangements on this song. Guitar, bass, and drums had the most to do with the structure [of the track]. We recorded it at The Shop studio in Boulder in late 2015. Overall, the closest simple description of our sound is original classic rock, with power pop, funk and other influences. Different people hear different decades.

We like. So what’s up with GingerSlap! in 2016?

We’re preparing for our live show/CD release at Nissi’s on Thursday, January 21, 2016. Other than that, we’re looking for good places to play in the Denver/Boulder area, summer festivals etc.

Awesome. Keep up with GingerSlap! here. And lend your ear to their rockin' self-titled album here:
