This BolderBeat Writer Missed Concerts, So She Threw Her Own

By: Mirna Tufekcic

During these uncertain and trying times, we find ourselves living in, one thing is for certain:  music heals. Knowing this, after a long spring of non-existent live music and a hot summer of zero music festivals, I came to the conclusion that if I wanted to enjoy some live music that I like, with the people I like, I had to make it happen myself. So, I made up my mind to create a small, socially-distanced music event in my own backyard with my own musician friends and friends who love music.

I reached out to a few of my musician friends to see if they were willing- considering the circumstances- and available to play a backyard house show and then I reached out to some friends to see if they were willing- considering the circumstances- to experience such an event. The answer from pretty much all of them was an excited,”Yes!! On September 20th, a warm and sunny Sunday right before the fall equinox, we all gathered and experienced the magic of an all-acoustic live music show! I named it The Backyard Acoustic Sessions

Molly Kollier. Photo Credit: Franki3lee Productions

The musical evening kicked off with the young and promising Molly Kollier, a Boulder-based folk-guitar, singer/songwriter. Right away, her eccentric presence demanded we stop settling into our seats and listen closely as the lyrics of her songs used satire and wit to talk about dating, loneliness, and the state of the world. Her vocals were impressive, a folky, twangy chime and a range swinging from bird-like falsetto to belting a big statement on life and how to live it.

Hunter Stone. Photo Credit: Franki3lee Productions

Next came the talented, Hunter Stone. Hunter is an incredible solo artist, but he is also the frontman of a roots/folk/rock band Famous Men. Hunter is a natural guitar player, inspiring listeners with his own take on the everlasting folk-blues. His ear-perking, raw and gritty vocals are undeniably sophisticated and at-once enchanting. As the day turned to night, Hunter played his upcoming single “Closed for Season,” a timely song about knowing when to shut things down and move on, when to hibernate and wait for the storm to pass, preferably huddled with that special someone to hold on tight to. With his performance, Hunter ensured us that we were in a very special moment in time.

Paul Kimbiris. Photo Credit: Franki3lee Productions

Paul Kimbiris. Photo Credit: Franki3lee Productions

I can’t say enough about the musician that graced us with his presence next: Paul Kimbiris.  One of Boulder’s best talents, Paul’s performances are tonic. The moment he sits behind the mic, you are transported to another place uniquely designed by Paul's affecting lyrics and riveting guitar. It's a sobering moment. On this magical evening in my backyard, Paul played an electric hollowbody guitar through an old Slivertone amp, creating a retro-vintage atmosphere.  While his guitar sounds echoed a haunting blend of mellotrons, the timbre of his voice had us all feeling our feelings. Paul finished the set with his upcoming single "Queen of Birds," a dreamy tune from the point of view of a man who’s lived a hundred years and recalls a much simpler time of long ago.

Thomas LaFond. Photo Credit: Franki3lee Productions

Thomas LaFond. Photo Credit: Franki3lee Productions

Thomas LaFond, who you may have seen play at Boulder’s speakeasy License No.1 in a jazzy-dance-jam ensemble Banshee Tree, closed the night with a set featuring his new, original tunes. Seducing us with his discerning guitar skills, which took twenty years to manicure, his playing genuinely lays out the right environment for each song. Thom is known to live his life in service to song. Poised in Nederland, he has been recording and releasing music daily, and this is not an exaggeration! His originals are stocked with details, dissociative feelings, and disconnected phrases. His singing is dark and rich in harmonics. Having him play the final set of the evening was truly a cherry on top of a decadent four-layered cake!

The Backyard Acoustic Sessions was a smashing success and everyone left with their musical cups full looking forward to the next one, maybe a winter edition!

Wilson Harwood Returns to Colorado For Boulder-In-The-Round & More

By: Hannah Oreskovich

Last year, singer/songwriter Wilson Harwood made the move from Boulder to Nashville after the release of his EP Roll Away The Day. Since then, he’s worked on recording new music and continued touring the US with his solo work.

Wilson Harwood.

Wilson Harwood.

This week, Harwood returns to the Colorado music scene on a six show tour, with a stop in Boulder this Wednesday, March 1st for Boulder-In-The-Round at eTown Hall. He will share the stage with Hunter Stone, AJ Fullerton, and Michael Howard. This will be an extra special performance for Harwood at BITR’s new location, as he helped create the event (formerly hosted at Vapor Distillery) with Stone and Theresa Peterson back in 2015.

Said Harwood of the upcoming BITR show, “I’m excited to continue the tradition of performing original music where the focus is on the song without a backing band or stage production.”

Wilson will also be releasing a single on his Colorado run at his Longmont show March 8th at Still Cellars. The new track is called “Rose Petal” and Harwood is stoked to debut it live in his old stomping grounds of Colorado. It’s got a more bluesy vibe at the start than the tunes you may have heard on Harwood’s last record, but it keeps the easy-listening vibes that Harwood has previously been known for.

So make sure to catch this talented singer/songwriter over the next week Colorado! You can peep Harwood’s full tour schedule here, and stay tuned for more music from Wilson on his website.

Boulder In-The-Round Moves to eTown

By: Claire Woodcock

If you’re in Boulder and find yourself in the music scene circle, you’ve probably already come across Boulder In-The-Round. What began as workshopping sessions for founders Hunter Stone and Theresa Peterson soon morphed into into a monthly concert series hosted by Vapor Distillery.

Boulder In-The-Round at its previous location, Vapor Distillery.

Boulder In-The-Round at its previous location, Vapor Distillery.

This year, Boulder In-The-Round has a new home. eTown Hall will host the concert series that features local artists the first Wednesday of every month. The program showcases four songwriters who take turns performing one song at a time, one after the other.

“We’re bringing a different group to eTown that doesn’t go there regularly,” says Stone, also a singer/songwriter in the community. “Our show has its own following of young music lovers and musicians that we’re going to be able to bring to this really cool venue.”

Hunter Stone.

Hunter Stone.

Boulder In-The-Round’s community presence will be amplified by eTown’s state of the art sound equipment engineered by sound technicians at eTown. Local singer/songwriters will set up in eTown’s cafe for an intimate listening room experience.

“If you enjoy this kind of thing, you’re entering a world where everybody there is interested in music too,” says Theresa Peterson, co-founder of Boulder In-The-Round, and a singer/songwriter herself.

Theresa Peterson.

Theresa Peterson.

eTown syndicates its programming nationally, which means the venue often brings in bigger artists. The folks behind Boulder In-The-Round are providing local artists with access and opportunity to state of the art equipment and a larger listening base.

“Having Boulder In-The-Round at eTown opens up the community to who’s coming through, who’s playing when; shows that should be on their radar,” says Stone. “It’s bridging the gap between local and national artists, giving us all a space to grow.”

eTown Cafe, the new home of BITR.

eTown Cafe, the new home of BITR.

Also moving to eTown are the live paintings that Boulder In-The-Round exhibited when they were at the Vapor. Visual artists begin with a blank canvas and the artists create to the beat of the songs. At the end of the night, artists are left with a tangible piece of art from the evening that is sometimes auctioned off to the crowd.

“Art shouldn’t be segregated. Adding that visual aspect to the auditory: seeing someone painting live and seeing what they’re creating in the moment it kind of regulates the growth of the show,” says Stone.

Mike Tresemer painting at a Boulder In-The-Round.

Mike Tresemer painting at a Boulder In-The-Round.

Boulder In-The-Round’s first night at eTown is tomorrow, January 4 at 7PM in the eTown cafe. On the bill are singer/songwriters Dechen Hawk, Megan Burtt, Monica Marie and Dusty Stray. Live paintings will be produced by local artists Mick Tresemer and Ellen Moershel

Check out a live video performance from a previous Boulder In-The-Round:

“It’s all original music,” says Peterson. “There’s a lot of collaboration that happens too on the spot. A lot of times we’ll have people that just met or have only met a couple times before just playing on each other’s songs all night.”

“The idea of that being recognized by an outside source and [eTown] giving us a chance to brow our show into a different space, that could potentially help us grow a lot,” says Stone. “It feels really good to have that kind of validation. Theresa and I started this with the mentality that if you build it, it will come.”

And Boulder In-The-Round is well on its way. More on this month’s lineup herekeep up with BITR on their Facebook.

Beth Preston's Album Release Show at The Fox Was a Night of Local Music Success

By: Zach Dahmen

There was a lot of local talent on stage at The Fox last week.

Behind the sweet warmth of the summer night, Fox Theatre’s sign was aglow last Thursday for the album release of Beth Preston’s new LP Little Mirrors. Local music enthusiasts crowded in front of the marquee on The Hill for a unique collection of local Colorado musicians: Paul Kimbiris, We Dream Dawn, and headliner Beth Preston.

Paul Kimbiris. Photo per ALOC Media.

Paul Kimbiris. Photo per ALOC Media.

Boulder favorite Paul Kimbiris set the tone for the evening with a fast-paced, heartfelt set. Playing with the same band who has backed him for other Fox performances, and who sometimes play together as BLVD, Kimbiris and his crew pulled the crowd lingering outside to the front of the stage with a foot-stomping set of originals. Kimbiris’ earnest songwriting and aggressively catchy music has made him a Boulder favorite for a reason, and he did not disappoint.

Sage Cook of We Dream Dawn. Photo per ALOC Media.

Next was We Dream Dawn, a three-piece doing indie folk at its best. Both melodic and engaging, in their set, the band drew well-deserved attention as the middle players of the evening’s lineup.  WDD has a sound that is simple, and yet very complex all at once, which kept the attention of the crowd. Their addition of a violin on many of their tunes left many in the crowd wishing that their set were longer. It was impressive.

After We Dream Dawn, I headed to the green room, which was filled with local musicians sharing libations, stories, and few pre-show yoga positions. The atmosphere was an excited energy for what was to come, and that was Beth Preston.

Preston took the stage with the presence of a seasoned performer confidently pouring out her new tunes. Her contemplative and passionate writing paired well with her deep vocals, which are reminiscent of Fiona Apple. Preston’s eclectic set of music from Little Mirrors came alive with a cavalcade of local instrumentalists, including Hunter Stone on guitar, Leor Manelis on drums, Jon Wirtz on keys, Jon Gray on trumpet, Danny Rankin on bass, and Bridget Law of Elephant Revival on violin. This particular amalgamation of talent was put together especially for this show, which made for a dynamic and busy stage.

Bridget Law of Elephant Revival. Photo per ALOC Media.

Highlights of Preston’s set included the instantly catchy “Spirits”, and the wondering and beautifully contemplative song “Jesse’s Song”, a tune accented expertly by Gray on trumpet. To close, the band did a full rendition of The Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields”, with every member leaving the stage one at a time.

Overall, the night was one of the strongest local sets that has been played at the Fox Theater in some time. It was a perfect display of what putting Colorado local talent on one stage can create: a very good night of music.

BolderBeat's Tiny Desk Contest Compilation + This Weekend's Shows to See

By: Hannah Oreskovich

You entered. We watched (and listened).

Hey Colorado! A lot of local acts have been working on something awesome the past couple of weeks- their submissions to NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest! As you probably know, NPR has a sweet feature called Tiny Desk, the brainchild of Bob Boilen, who is also the creator of All Songs Considered. Boilen essentially invites artists to play at his desk and their intimate performances are recorded live; often they’re really badass. Check out some of the most recent Tiny Desk performances here.

Last year, NPR started the Tiny Desk Contest, allowing any and every US artist to have a shot at getting an invite to play Boilen’s sought-after desk. The winner was Fantastic Negrito, who you can check out here. This year, the winner will play the Tiny Desk and also appear in a taping of NPR’s Ask Me Another and tour the US with NPR and Lagunitas. We kept seeing so many local band’s submissions pop up that we decided to throw them all in a feature for your viewing pleasure. We were impressed by everyone’s submissions and we're sure you will be too. So give these vids some traffic yo:

Music Masquerade: A Thank You

By: Zach Dahmen + a note from Hannah Oreskovich

Last Saturday's #MusicMasquerade was a huge success! A big thank you to the bands and those that joined us at the rockin' Studio 700 show. It was a good night of music in Boulder and BolderBeat was on hand for the event, detailing the night so you don’t miss a beat. Check back with us soon to hear about Studio 700's next show! Until then, here's our recap:

IMG_3508.jpg

Everyone's mask game was on point.

Three-piece Noctogon started the night out with a fresh sound for Boulder. Their melody-driven vocals and use of keys over some very heavy guitars lit up Studio 700.

Noctogon getting the party goin'.

IMG_7698.jpg

Full bar with a masked tender.

Villain Baritone brought the party together, first with their groovin' originals and then with a little help from their friends...

Andrew Sturtz and Hunter Stone shared the stage with the trio, keeping the tunes flowing. Sturtz powerfully crooned the crowd for his entire appearance. The group's rendition of "Sex and Candy" was a sweet treat.

Whiskey Autumn really got people moving! The band has been settling into a more eclectic set recently, and their indie/R&B sounds had the crowd swaying in all the right ways.

The WA boys were a stage-breaking good time (right David?).

A New Era of Music at Cafe Aion

By: Pete Laffin

Cafe Aoin is ready to bring on the tunes.

A few months ago, the guys at Cafe Aion asked me to come in and talk about the possibility of creating a weekend music program. I arrived as they were closing up for the night, and I as I made my way up the stairs to the dining room, all I could think was: Fuck, this place is beautiful.

View of the stage at revamped Cafe Aion.

View of the stage at revamped Cafe Aion.

The last time I’d been in there it was called Burnt Toast, and significant upgrades had been made to the interior. A big, unnecessary wall had been removed, which opened up the room and made it seem far larger than before; a new bar had been built with significant space surrounding it for late-night patrons. Coupled with what the room already had going for itself (a red-brick fireplace, hardwood flooring, wide windows looking out on Pennsylvania Avenue), these upgrades made the place glow with late night potential. When I learned that a new stage would be built as an extension of the window platforms, I signed on to the project without hesitation. This looked to be the kind of venue I and many other Boulder music lovers have long awaited: a beautiful, classy room tailored for acoustic acts (and small band set-ups), but with a true nightlife atmosphere (premium cocktails and craft brews).

Cafe Aion, the nightlife version, doesn’t project to be another small, rock venue that caters to obscenely loud acts, nor does it project to be anything like the acoustic alternatives in town: coffeeshops with loud machinery where half the room ignores the live music in favor of glowing laptop screens.

Cafe Aion: The Nightlife Version.

Cafe Aion: The Nightlife Version.

The potential of this project has me giddy. There is an overflow of local acts who are a perfect fit for this type of space, with very few, if any, comparable alternatives. Since taking on the booking, I have done my darnedest to pack the calendar with premium local acoustic acts. On February 5th, Paul Kimbiris (whose latest album I had the pleasure of reviewing) will christen the new stage, followed the next night by the fantastic folk ensemble, Foxfeather.

I will be writing up profiles right here on BolderBeat every Wednesday for each of the weekend acts during our first month of operation, so keep an eye out! All weekend shows begin at 10PM, and we can’t wait to share with you, the music lovers of Boulder, what we’ve put together.

Look over February's full schedule & check back for artist bios every Wednesday on BolderBeat:

For information on booking, please contact me at aionbookings@gmail.com, and I will get back to you post-haste!

Studio 700: The Awesome DIY Venue Hosting Tomorrow's #MusicMasquerade

By: Hannah Oreskovich

Gotta love DIY.

We’re skipping our usual Weekend Six feature today since we’re sponsoring a sweet show tomorrow that we want to tell you a lil’ baby more about, B. Read on:

Studio 700 is a Boulder DIY venue explained to us by three of its creators: Joshua Thomas (of Villain Baritone), Boulder singer/songwriter Hunter Stone, and a man known only to us as Buckles. What started as a group of local musicians looking for a house turned into an awesome DIY venue, complete with a stage, lights, sound equipment, and a curious cutout of Alfred Hitchcock. The place is well lit, insulated, and rumored to have been used by James Taylor’s daughter for recording purposes back in the day. And the idea for its inception started with house hunting on (what else kids?) Craigslist.

Hunter: When I found the house, I was excited. I mean, I knew the potential here. I thought, ‘If we don’t get this space, it will be taken over by beer pong.’ And I knew we could turn it into something more.

Joshua: Yeah we saw this place and we were like schoolboys- we were walking around like we could do this and this and this- just drawing up silly things and mainly just getting excited. Once we saw this space, we were like ‘This is happening.’

And so began Studio 700. The venue has hosted three shows to date, each with a cool theme and an all-local lineup.

Joshua: We do this so that we can support local artists and give them a showcase, so we try to put something on at least once a month.

Hunter: Yeah there are just so many bands in Boulder that are good bands, and there just aren’t enough venues that service the musicians here. I mean The Fox is the ideal destination for most people playing in Boulder, but there just aren’t a lot of other places where music is the focused intent. And so that’s what we want to create here; a community.

Hunter & Joshua at Studio 700 talkin' 'bout Studio 700.

Hunter & Joshua at Studio 700 talkin' 'bout Studio 700.

So how did they build this sweet spot?

Buckles: It’s been collaborative between all of us. A lot of the physical things have definitely been Josh- building the stage and getting up the lights. And then we all have contributed different equipment.

Hunter: Yeah, like I set up a lot of my recording equipment in here. I’ve used some of that for my project Hole in the Wall Recording, which has also involved some video production. And you’ve recorded in here too, right Josh?

Joshua: Yeah with Villain Baritone, we’ve recorded a lot of our music in here. The first thing we tracked [at Studio 700] were drums and it actually sounded amazing.

Joshua and Buckles in the s700 shadows.

Joshua and Buckles in the s700 shadows.

But the guys have plans beyond recording and once-a-month shows too.

Josh: Longterm we want to collaborate with more people to see more of what we can do here and what the possibilities are.

Hunter: I’d like to use it for more intimate things too- singer/songwriter nights and smaller shows. We want to fill the place with art; have live painting during shows. And of course we’ll keep booking bands. We want to use [this] to raise money to pay musicians and to book bands where their fans overlap. We want to keep incorporating small businesses… I mean there’s a lot of potential for it. It’s just about realizing all of the potential.

So come support this rad DIY spot Boulder! We brought you coverage on all three local bands playing tomorrow’s #MusicMasquerade, and if you missed those, click ‘em here: Whiskey Autumn, Villain Baritone with Special Guests Andrew Sturtz and Hunter Stone, and Noctogon. Join the FB event for specifics by clicking this sentence.

We’ll see you tomorrow, masked and all. Happy Weekend!

Catching Up with Whiskey Autumn: Fireworks, #MusicMasquerade, & R&B Jams

By: Hannah Oreskovich

Boulder's Whiskey Autumn are bringing new tunes to this Saturday's Music Masquerade.

We’re just two days away from our #MusicMasquerade with Whiskey Autumn, Villain Baritone featuring Andrew Sturtz and Hunter Stone, and Noctogon at Studio 700! Want the event details? Then peep the FB event here. This week, we’ve already brought you features on both the boys of Villain Baritone and the prog/alt rock trio that is Boulder’s Noctogon. Give those a read if you haven’t yet kids.

Today, we’re talkin’ Whiskey Autumn, the headliner of Saturday’s bill. This indie, doo-wop rock trio comprised of Greg Laut (vocals/guitar/keys), David Landry (bass/vocals), and Matty Schelling (drums, vocals) have been up to some pretty sweet thangs as of late:

They dropped this badass video for their single 07.04.07:

And they released 07.04.07 for free download and your listening pleasure:

You might notice that 07.04.07 has more R&B and pop undertones than some of Whiskey Autumn’s previous work, and that’s the sort of sound the band has been experimenting with most recently. Said frontman Greg Laut:

I had grown a bit tired of the Americana vibe of our previous two EP’s so writing from a R&B/pop perspective felt very refreshing. The recording process for 07.04.07 was interesting because we chopped up and sampled the beat in a similar manner to what a hip hop producer might do and incorporated some electronic elements. We’re constantly pushing to further develop our sound and explore new ideas. The song is certainly a sign of things to come in the near future.

The three-piece have written several other songs in this new vein, one of which they just filmed a live video performance for with Ian Glass Media (who also filmed 07.04.07). They plan to drop that video sometime in February, along with a live performance video of a popular R&B cover that you’ve probably seen them play at one of their recent shows.

A scene from 07.04.07.

A scene from 07.04.07.

Whiskey Autumn is also heading back into the studio over the next couple of months with plans for a new EP release in the late summer or early fall of 2016 Want to check out their previous EPs? Head here.

When we asked the WA boys what they’re most excited about for Saturday’s #MusicMasquerade, they told us this:

We’re really looking forward to playing a rocking, DIY venue like Studio 700. Plus everyone will be wearing masquerade masks so it will feel like we are in Eyes Wide Shut. Fingers crossed that Tom Cruise will dig our sound.

So there you have it Boulder! Come see Whiskey Autumn close out the night at Studio 700 this Saturday! Join the FB event righhhht here. And don’t forget your mask...

From "Spirit in the Sky" to 180BPM Hard Rock, Villain Baritone is Ready to Make You Dance Saturday at Studio 700

By: Hannah Oreskovich

Boulder's Villian Baritone are ready to rock out with you this weekend, masks and all.

12507254_705288299608799_8242541389850337508_n.png

We’re getting excited to party with you + Whiskey Autumn, Villain Baritone, and Noctogon this Saturday at Studio 700 Boulder! Get your masks for the masquerade theme STAT and don’t forget to peep the deets in the FB event here. As we mentioned Monday in our Noctogon feature, local alt-power trio Villain Baritone put together the all-Boulder lineup for this event, and today we’re catching up with them! Comprised of Joshua Thomas (drums), Robert Spears (bass/keys) and Brent Wilkinson (vocals/guitar), our first feature on these dudes dropped shortly after they got together and jumped on the scene (eye that piece here). And boyyyy have they been busy since. Here’s our catch up:

Last time we chatted, you guys were actually in the process of laying down some tracks at Studio 700. Give us an update!

Brent: Well we’ve been working on polishing our live sound. We’ve sent our song “Vines” around, but other then that, we’ve just been rehearsing as much as we can and setting up our show.

Rob: We’ve got a full set; an hour long set, and the songs are really starting to take shape and fall into place.

12194553_679904975480465_6027986398661391089_o.jpg

Josh: [At the show Saturday] we’ll be playing 7 or 8 originals. We’ll play some covers too- we’ll be doing a Dr. Dog cover, a Black Keys song, Tracy Chapman…

Rob: And don’t forget Norman.

Josh: Oh right- Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky”.

Oh hell yeah! That sounds awesome.

Josh: We’ve also been playing with Andrew Sturtz, so for the show we’ll back him on a couple of his own [originals] and he’s gonna back us on some of ours too, which is the beginning stages of a possible mashup. Hunter Stone will make some stage appearances as well. [PS: We heard Sturtz has a No Name show tomorrow- click here for that info.]

Brent: Yeah it’s been fun working with them- they’re both talented and their material kind of compliments ours.

Sweet! Putting together a full set from scratch is workkk. What was that like?

Rob: When we first started our creative drive came from Brent’s songs- he had written them already and we sort of turned those into our own songs. But then- and I’ve never done this before- we started writing together, the three of us. It’s a difficult thing when you have different personalities and all three of us come from different places musically- Josh and I aren’t even on our first instruments either. But we really just started to click together as a trio. One day we sat down and were like, ‘Let’s write a song today’. We threw out different things- we wanted it to be dancy, to have a drive to it- and a couple of hours later the song was done! So what kind of started as a causal jam thing that we were doing at The Outback has become more.

Brent: Definitely. We’ve been playing together since the summer but the platform we’re at now is getting a feel for the process of the trio itself. It’s great and it’s night and day from what we started with.

Rob: Yeah I mean we’ve actually even thrown out a few songs because we’ve just moved on to bigger and better things. Out set list is pretty dynamic- I mean we go from 160BPM-

Josh: ...More like 180BPM.

Rob (laughs): Yeah like 180 BPM almost hard rock to like soul and jazz influences.

Brent: Yeah bringing in the tone of it all has been fun.

Well we are hardcore diggin’ said tones in “Vines” and we can’t wait for VB's set Saturday. Props on a sweet lineup dudes, and thanks for letting us be a part of the magic.

Come see Villain Baritone’s set at Studio 700 this Saturday! Join the FB event righhhht here. And if you missed them on the radio last Sunday as part of our Green Light Radio partnership (or even if you didn’t!) give their track “Vines” a listen below:

By: Hannah Oreskovich

BITR has been at it for a year and it's time to celebrate.

Vapor Distillery. Photo Credit: Hannah Oreskovich

Vapor Distillery. Photo Credit: Hannah Oreskovich

On the first Wednesday of every month, you can hear some sweet sounds behind the garage door of Vapor Distillery. And who’s been bringin’ them to yah? Boulder-in-the-Round! And while tonight is the first Wednesday of the month, it also happens to be just a little bit more than that for BITR: It’s their 1st Anniversary Showcase!

We caught up with BITR’s organizers this week to ask them about hitting the one-year mark of their monthly tradition. Said Hunter Stone, “We are both so excited to be celebrating the anniversary show. We’ve had so much support from the community in the past year. We’re thankful to have met and hosted so many great musicians and fostered connections between artists and fans, while helping build a creative culture for songwriting in our community.” Added Theresa Peterson, “I’ve watched [Boulder-in-the-Round] connect people to each other and to local, original music. It’s been awesome to watch that community grow. We can’t wait to celebrate and to see what year two has in store!”

So who’s playing tonight’s anniversary party?

All four acts this evening happen to be Boulder based: folk/pop mountain dulcimer player Eric Elliott, soul/jazz guitarist, pianist, and vocalist Dechen Hawk, rock/blues guitarist and vocalist Hunter Stone, and folk guitarist, vocalist, and one part of Monocle’s Bill Huston.

The style of any Boulder-in-the-Round event is to have four badass musicians lined up on stage who then take turns playing songs. Sometimes they’ll jam together; sometimes they roll solo. Either way, they’re always so talented that you don’t really care what they’re doing- you just wanna listen. Wanting a lil taste of each artist? Lucky for you, we’ve put together a playlist for your eyes and ears here:

Eric Elliott:

Dechen Hawk:

Hunter Stone:

Bill Huston with Monocle:

Go celebrate Boulder’s awesome music community at Boulder-in-the-Round’s 1st Anniversary Showcase tonight! See you there.

Hey Boulder! We’ve missed you! We took off a few days of bringing you content in order to begin organizing something pretty awesome: Our first Fall Music Showcase! We’re super excited to be working with different local artists to bring you an event full of great music, tasty drinks, door prizes, Polaroids, and more! In the meantime, we’re back! And here are a few things we think you should check out since the last time we chatted:

Tonight is Boulder-in-the-Round October Style! This is an event we really love hosted by people we really dig (Theresa Peterson, Wilson Harwood, Hunter Stone), so it’s a winning combo all around. Basically, a group of local musicians take turns playing songs at Vapor Distillery from 7-10PM and it’s a tasty time. Harwood is actually playing in tonight’s round, along with Colin Robinson, A.J. Fullerton, and Samantha Emmitt (½ of sister duo Samsara). Go check it out!

Second, we want to give a special shout out to Boulder singer/songwriter Wilson Harwood for more than just his upcoming performance in The Round tonight. Harwood actually released a new single this week! It’s called “Saturated in Sunshine,” and after the last few rainy days Boulder, it’s feeling pretty nice to jam this one out with some real rays. You can listen to it (and buy it!) here. You can also learn more about his upcoming single release party this weekend here. Or go see him tonight at the BITR!

A couple of other events for tonight: Shine Gathering Place is having a music benefit for The Malala Fund with Latlaus Sky & Von Disco, which you can learn more about here. Whiskey Autumn plays the Pearl Street Pub 10PM-Close. And Conor O’Neill’s is hosting an Open Bluegrass Pick.

It feels good to be back Boulder. Stay tuned for more music news, and our upcoming buzzzzzzzz on our Fall Music Showcase!

The Weekend Six: Six Shows to See 10/02, 10/03, & 10/04

By: Hannah Oreskovich

It’s fall! It’s October! And it’s the weekend! Here are our six picks:

Today (Friday, 10/02)

VoodooJulia at Powder Keg Brewing Company 7PM-9PM

Local singer-songwriter Valerie Bhat’s got a band and their name is VoodooJulia. They describe themselves as a “four-piece rock-funk-blues band” with a mix of female fronted covers (Fiona Apple, Amy Winehouse) and a slew of “west Texas driven originals by Valerie.” Make the quick trip to Niwot to check them out over a brew tonight!

The augustus boys.

Augustus featuring Pete Laffin at Twisted Pine Brewing 7PM-Close

Local three-piece Augustus will be rocking the Twisted Pine house tonight with an awesome intro set by Boulder singer-songwriter Pete Laffin. Hit their show after your work day for a pretzel plate + a saison, and let these boys spin you into the weekend. It’s gonna be a great time so come out!

ramaya soskin.

Ramaya and The Troubadours featuring David Sheingold at The Laughing Goat Coffeehouse 8PM-Close

Tonight’s LG performance has been dubbed as “Ramaya [Soskin] joined by a rotating cast of fellow songwriters and local favorites at our beloved monthly haunt.” Soskin always puts on an engaging performance, and we’re pumped to see that David Sheingold’s talents will be shaking the stage tonight with the group. This should be a bumpin’ set, so go get your caffeine (or booze) fix and listen!

First Funk Friday at Bohemian Biergarten 1030PM-Close

It’s the first Friday of the month! And that means it’s Funk Friday at Bohemian Biergarten. DJ Shiny Shoes will be opening the night with “some electronic funk flavor” before main act Whiskey Autumn takes the BB stage. The WA boys told us they wanna get down witcha, so go funk out with them!

Tomorrow (Saturday, 10/03)

Saturday Soiree at Studio 700 6PM-???

Afrofunk folktronica outfit Mbanza is rumored to be here, and so is Boulder-based Villain Baritone. Local singer-songwriter Hunter Stone is one of the hosts of this event, and that’s pretty much all I know. Jamming, smiling, dancing, and a generally awesome DIY vibe are bound to be here tomorrow night. Be adventurous and go check out this surprise soiree!

The Next Day (Sunday, 10/04)

Holly & Ken Road Show at Harmony Music House

Ken Stringfellow (formerly of R.E.M., The Posies, and the re-formed Big Star) recently made a country concept album with Texas singer Holly Munoz. Stringfellow describes it as, “going deep into the back story of the n’er do well couple from Doesn’t It Remind You of Something… picking up where Willie Nelson left off with his Red Headed Stranger…mashing that up in the French countryside…and lassoing in YOU to help, cowpoke.” Together the duo are performing said album in what they call The Holly & Ken Road Show, and they’ve got a special Boulder performance at The Harmony House. Tickets are $20- buy them here.

Happy fall!! Enjoy the weekend Boulder!
