Extra Gold's Debut Record Has the Boot-Stompin' Bangers Denver's Country Scene Needs

With festivals like Country Jam and Bands in the Backyard, Colorado is no stranger to some good ol’ western music. And though it may not be as prevalent a genre as Colorado’s rock or hip-hop scenes, bands like Denver’s Extra Gold are setting the stage for a country Mile High takeover.

Formed in 2017, Extra Gold cut their chops by throwing a once-a-month showcase for country music at Denver’s Syntax Physic Opera. Crafted as “a take on country music cocktail that is equal parts golden-era country revival, folk, and rock & roll,” Extra Gold soon found themselves opening for larger Colorado favorites like The Yawpers and Dragondeer. Now, the band are set to release their debut record High & Lonesome this Friday, November 30th with a show at Denver’s Hi-Dive.

Founded by Evan Holm (guitar/vocals), Extra Gold is comprised of Gan Matthews (guitar), Carl Sorenson (drums), Randi Guthrie (bass), Ben Waligoski (pedal steel), Erin Armstrong (vocals), and Sami Steidl (fiddle). After the crew started gaining a reputation for their “tender three-part harmony ballads” and inciting “two-steppin’, beer slingin’ dance parties,” they picked up shows with honky-tonk heroes Whitey Morgan, Joshua Hedley, Jesse Dayton, Zephaniah Ohora, and more. They also played Denver’s Underground Music Showcase this past summer, and have plans for a slew of shows in 2019.

High & Lonesome, which is an 8-track LP mix of cosmic country ballads and boot-stompin’ bangers is a very solid debut for this Colorado band. The record was recorded with Mark Anderson in Denver. Tracks like “Emily” showcase the band’s incredible harmonies, “When The Matches Meet The Wood” has fiery strings that will force you to your feet, and title track “High And Lonesome” is the record’s crooner, a tune that is perfect for your favorite fireside playlist this season.

The Velveteers' Release Party Was Bloody Good Rock'N'Roll

The Velveteers sold-out the iconic Hi-Dive in Denver last Friday for their self-titled EP release party. An hour after the doors opened, the place was packed with both young and seasoned heavy rock’n’roll fans.

The keen energy in the room was stoked by Denver’s own hard rock/punk band Plastic Daggers, who by the end of their set decided to smash their bass against the stage. Their drummer also brought so much thrill to the performance that he left the stage with bloody hands. There is nothing like blood and broken instruments to start off a good night of music at the Hi-Dive.

During set break, fans were getting excited for the main event of the evening. As sound check started, people eagerly stared at the stage in anticipation for the first riff from The Velveteers to send them off. When you have fans getting this excited for sound check, let’s be real, you must be doing something right.

The lights dimmed and The Velveteers walked onstage, accompanied by grave-like organ instrumentation blasting over the speakers. Noah Shomberg and John Demitro hit the first beat on two synced drum sets positioned on opposite sides of the stage as Demi Demitro, the front lady set dead center between them, sent out her signature harsh and heavy, yet elegant strokes of baritone guitar off into the crowd.

If you haven’t already heard, Demi Demitro is a powerhouse to be reckoned with. Her undeniable talent and presence on stage demands attention and awe as she sings mesmerizing lyrics with enchanted vocals seasoned to put a hex on you. But it’s the song “Just Like The Weather,” the lead single from the band's new self-titled EP, that is ripe with vivacity and momentum to take this band to even higher places than they've already been. Their entire performance was the guitar-scraping-monitors, head-banging blast that the band has come to be known for.

This Denver Company Is Connecting The Traveling Music Community One Overnight Stay At A Time

Colin Bultinck’s business idea started where many great ones do: at a music festival.

Bonnaroo was one of the first things that inspired me to be a musician.” Colin recently told us, with his first trek to the fest’s Manchester stomping grounds being back in 2015 (Kendrick Lamar headlined that year ICYMI).

“People are so positive there and there were so many people who had traveled from all over the place to be there. That’s when I realized friends were staying in hotels, camping, and looking for places to spend the night near the festival.” Bultinck said, “And that’s when I was surprised that there wasn’t something already like this.”

By this, Bultinck means his company Rock n Doze, an online site where users can book a room for a night similar to Airbnb, but with a heavy music focus.

“I’ve been a lifelong musician and though I’ve never gone on tour, I have a lot of friends who have. Being involved in the music community, I know it’s a struggle for traveling musicians to find a place to stay, and better yet, to practice. I know touring bands who have stayed in their cars or at someone’s apartment who they met at their show. And I know bands who find themselves inspired on the road wishing they could play once they get to their destination, but don’t have the option.” Bultinck said, “Then there are also the fans. I’ve traveled to four Airbnbs specifically for concerts and music events this past year. Rock n Doze brings this entire music community together.”

Much like Airbnb, anyone can book a room for the night on Rock n Doze and anyone can host a room or home. But users are also encouraged to talk music! If hosts have a studio or practice space, they can include that with their room for rent. If they have gear available for use, they can market that as well. Fans can also book with Rock n Doze and expect to have a host who is more knowledgeable about the local music scene than your average Airbnb-er.

“Before I moved to Denver, I stayed at an Airbnb. I wanted to find a city where the music scene was supportive of local artists so I shared my story with the host and asked about looking at local music spots that I’d be able to play if I moved here. The host didn’t know any music venues. They were right down on South Broadway by Hi-Dive and 3 Kings! I was surprised that Denver could be such a big music city, but they had no idea where the local spots were. That’s when I realized that whether you’re a musician, a tech on tour, or a fan, there should be something to further connect the traveling music community.”

Hence the birth of Rock n Doze, which is currently available in several music markets with a focus on the Denver and Front Range music scenes. The site is currently in its first stages, with a full launch planned around the start of festival season. Still, it’s already seeing business.

“At my house, I offer a studio space with a drum kit and mics and amps. I had a band who stayed at my house recently, and I jammed out with them for a little bit,” Bultinck said, “This could open up opportunities for home concerts, ride-sharing for fans, and even connecting with potential fans on a more personal level if you’re a hosting band.”

Local industry players can also advertise services on the site- concert photographers, street teams, and other promotional show services are already available for booking.

Which brings us to the dough. Rock n Doze takes only 5% of fees for services and spots booked, which is less than competitor Airbnb. Just one conversation with Colin will tell you that while he wants to grow the business, the goal of Rock n Doze goes far beyond profit margins.

“We offer bands a cheap place to stay and play, and fans a place to meet other music-lovers.” Bultinck said, “[Rock n Doze] is meant to support and connect an industry that really needs it. I honestly think it’s the future of the traveling music community.”

Overslept Kick Off Fall Tour With Intimate Denver Show

Overslept kicked off their fall tour at Hi-Dive in Denver recently, and it felt a lot like an intimate house party. The Hi-Dive was packed early for the opening acts Post/War, Never Let This Go (who will be touring with Overslept for a couple of weeks), and Evinair.

Overslept finally took the stage and rocked it from the start; their high energy was infectious and had the whole crowd singing along and dancing with them. Their stage presence speaks to the experience of a seasoned, more mainstream band, one who keep the crowd engaged with a performance to remember while interacting with them between songs as well. 

Overslept are heading East for the rest of their tour, which includes a stop in Florida to play Fest, a multi-day underground music festival that hosts hundreds of bands. The guys will wrap up their tour in Oklahoma on November 4th, so stay tuned for future Denver shows following!

Thursday 10/26: The Boulder Theater presents the unmistakeable: The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Colorado’s Elusive Ingredient- Denver’s Rocky Horror Shadowcast will perform along with the film. Whether you’re a seasoned attendee or a virgin to this interactive movie and theatre performance, it’s sure to make a great start to a funky weekend. The key word for this event is interactive.  Expect to touch or be touched.  

Friday & Saturday 10/27-10/28: Halloween weekend at The Boulder Theater will host a two-night “Rave from the Grave” party with Papadosio and friends. Papadosio plans to pay tribute to some of the 90s and early 2000s electronic artists that influenced their path as a band. To pop the cherry of this event, Boulder’s own Dynohunter will take guests on a journey through deep, grounding house tunes, just to lift you up through organic electro peaks and valleys you can rave about all over the dance floor. Saturday night, the party will start with Bass Physics, a one man show put together by Denver’s esteemed Arja Adair guaranteed to provide positive tunes while mixing up acoustic guitar and electronic sounds. Sunday 10/29: The Fox Theatre is hosting Sinful Sunday Halloween Party with Midnight North and All Chiefs. Saturday 10/07: The Mile High City has big things on the agenda throughout October in almost every music venue. The spirit of the season starts with thousands of living dead wannabes at Denver’s Zombie Crawl, and the city will no doubt be bustling with dark spirits from then through the end of October.

Thursday 10/19: Marilyn Manson will bring his tour to the Fillmore Auditorium, as long as he’s healed up from his recent stage injury. While not a Halloween weekend event, it’s close enough, especially since he’s known for having the most disturbing Instagram account around. Enjoy. Friday 10/20: The Gasoline Lollipops are bringing you one scary hoedown at Denver's Lost Lake tonight. Hosted by 105.5 The Colorado Sound, Grayson County Burn Band and Whipperpool will join Colorado's favorite alt-country outfit on good 'ol Colfax for an eerie time. 

Friday 10/27: Lost Lake Lounge is throwing their Terrified Halloween party with Modern Suspects, a “popternative trio,” Optycnerd, an electo-indie-pop beats duo that bring the heat to the dance floor, and Vynyl, an electronic hip-hop pop duo. This one’s set for a full house of Denver-based musicians and beat-makers bound to terrify you into dancing the night away.

Friday 10/27: Syntax Physic Opera will host an early event starting at 7PM called Hell Toupee, A Lounge Night in Hell, which is a comedy and variety show. Then starting at 9PM, you can check out Lillian’s album release party.

Friday & Saturday 10/27-10/28: The Oriental Theater will have a weekend packed full of halloween celebrations. Friday night is the Third Annual Monster Ball with Alice in Chains and KISS tribute bands. Need I say more? Saturday night is reserved for a costume contest event called MORTIFIED, an international storytelling event where adults share their most embarrassing and hilarious childhood artifacts in front of total strangers. Dare I say terrifying?

Saturday 10/28: Bar Standard/Milk Bar will host a Colorado HELLoween Ball with TR/ST. It's the biggest event of the year from promoters Ritual Noize. TR/ST is considered a popular goth/industrial/dark electronic artist and HELLoween is a party for just such fans, so it should be a hell of a time if you’re into that scene. According to Ritual Noize, “HELLoween has always been about mixing club culture, the Halloween tradition and live musical performances with a horror theme attached.” This year the decor will be Psycho-themed; hurray for Hitchcock fans!

Saturday 10/28: Halloween Hootenanny at The Bluebird Theater will feature Denver DJ Wesley Wayne and a costume competition that can score you year passes to some of Denver’s most beloved venues. Deer Tick hails from Providence, Rhode Island with a rebellious take on alternative, folk, rock’n’roll, and country vibes.

Saturday 10/28: Larimer Lounge is hosting their Halloween Edition of Dance Yourself Clean with DJs inspired by the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Grimes, Blood Orange, and more. Shake off the sugar with this one.

Saturday 10/21: The Shining Ball at the Concert Hall of the famous Stanley Hotel will have yet another yearly Halloween staple with Denver’s beloved Gasoline Lollipops. We imagine the band will truly bring the spirit of Halloween to life, with growls from frontman Clay Rose and howls from the audience over the band’s poignant lyrics and dark, stompy tunes.

Review: Grunge Pop Duo Stereoshifter Release Fuzz-Driven, Drum-Pounding Rock Record 'Whatever it is to You'

Denver duo Stereoshifter describe their sound, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, as “grunge pop.” What is this seemingly contradicting genre? You’ll have to listen to find out:

Whatever it is to You, the band’s sophomore EP, which drops this week, features three guitar-fuzz-driven, drum-pounding rock songs that seem to have come straight from the 90s. Of course, it’s hard not to jump to conclusions and find the EP reminiscent of Nirvana and The Vines, but upon deeper listening, there are also traces and snippets of inspiration from acts ranging from Dinosaur Jr. to Weezer.

Following the release of their Dumb Luck EP (2016), Stereoshifter, which is Josh Cal (vocals/guitars) and Peter Higgins (drums), continued to write, record, and create new music. Starting 2017 with a brand-new single “All I Can Stand,” the two-piece is now closing out the summer with Whatever it is to You.

The EP is produced by the band, and starts out with the heavy and frantically anthemic “It’s Not You, it’s Me” that gives the kickstart needed to keep listening. The single “Catch Fire” comes in at track two and starts out with a very Thin Lizzy-esque “Boys Are Back in Town” riff before going into a pseudo Green Day-sounding chorus. The final track is the more mellow “Spoon Fed,” which I feel really caters the most to the traditional grunge vibe with a touch of post-rock for good measure due to its droning and sludgy riffs.

In their live performance, the two musicians adopt the approach to IAMDYNAMITE and similar rock duos of overlapping guitar and bass tracks, making it possible to sound like a four-piece act. Though minimalistic in setup, anyone who has seen any of these bigger acts can attest that the sound is anything but minimal.

The 2017 Underground Music Showcase Brought Together Artists & Fans For Four Days Of Awesome

Denver’s annual four day music festival The Underground Music Showcase rocked South Broadway last weekend. We crawled the strip, ate nothing but pizza, and almost refused to sleep in the name of good music. Here are some of our favorite things about this year’s festival:

Of course we went to as many shows as possible and of course most of them really rocked our socks off. But here we’re going to be shameless and first tell you about the killer acts who played our packed official day party.

BolderBeat & KGNU combined forces this year to bring you Brunch with a Beat at The UMS, which was five hours of sugar and synth by some of Colorado’s most promising electro acts.

Mirror Fears kicked things off with her industrial goth pop, Church Fire kept things movin’ with their Crystal Castles-esque electronic primal therapy, and DéCollage wrapped the front of The Irish Rover in Mylar and swept the stage with their avant-garde pop. Retrofette’s synth stylings followed, and created a massive dance party full of hip-shaking & flash tattoos. Whiskey Autumn’s indie synth pop closed the show; their unreleased track "Birds That Flew" had many whistling along to its chorus. And in between sets, DJ Erin Stereo crushed sweet beats. We gave away tickets to upcoming Future Islands and Thundercat shows, and we passed out donut lollipops, which many showgoers expressed they hoped were laced with weed (they were not kidz).

Our first official set at UMS 2017 was at Hi-Dive on Thursday with Anthony Ruptak, who started us off with amazing tunes from his new record Don’t Let It Kill You, and even streamed a Facebook live anti-Trump vid from the stage. Punk rock.

Ghost Tapes were a funky, neo-soul standout at Skylark; frontwoman Ishka Phoenix had the crowd melting as she delivered tasty R&B sounds from her ice cream microphone.

Corsicana gave us tasty indie tunes while we nommed hard on an Illegal Pete’s burrito, which was the only non-pizza item we allowed ourselves for sustenance. The four-piece are playing a couple of big Colorado shows with Hippo Campus this month, so make sure to roll to those.

OptycNerd describe themselves as “eclectro indie pop hop sexy time,” and well, we wish we’d written that ourselves. Their sexy time at Hi-Dive was enjoyed.

Zola Jesus brought her dark, operatic vocals to the main stage; Red Fang spouted the classic rock stoner jams they’re known for to a headbanging crowd.

What is cooler than wearing glow-in-the-dark face paint? Glow-in-the-dark guitar strings- DUH. Motion Trap had ‘em at their Rover set on Saturday, and they played their electro sonic disco tunes to a packed house that boogied with them from start to finish.

All Chiefs kept us out of the rain at Hi-Dive with their indie rock vibes, Evan Holm & The Restless Ones kicked up some folky soul at Gary Lee’s Motorcycle Club, and GALLERIES played a heartfelt tribute show celebrating the life of late Denver music prodigy Kyle McQueen.

Rock’n’roll’s The Outfit played their final set ever at 3 Kings Tavern on Friday to a mosh-ready, beer-heavy crowd who were clearly sad to see them go.

The Savage Blush had a killer psych rock-dripping set at the main stage, Slowcaves brought us chill wave surf rock sounds, and Dragondeer managed to blues rock us almost straight through a downpour, though they had to cut their set a bit short when the rain just about flash-flooded the festival parking lot in true Colorado fashion.

Brent Cowles revived a soaking crowd with “Cold Times” when the sun came back out, Esmé Patterson slayed her evening dream rock set with unreleased music and a touching tribute with Kitty Crimes to the late Tyler Despres, and Benjamin Booker crowd surfed his way right into Colorado’s heart, closing out the main stage of the festival Sunday evening.

Breckenridge Brewing was a main sponsor for The UMS this year and we sipped many an Avalanche by the main stage throughout the fest. Dewar’s had what felt like a tiny house made for drinking with free smells and scotch eggs. It was delicious and why you would have wasted your tongue on any other mixed drink in the hot sun and the pouring rain is beyond us.

Mixed Up Gifts’ pop up shop on South Broadway had some sweet merch for sale from Sacred Bones Records and a creepy night light if you’re in the market to wake up afraid of the dark only to find Jason lurking in your bathroom. But best of all was their bunny, who tried to coerce festival-goers into the shop while eerily reading children’s books through the window.

No, not that kind you typical Denverite. Overall, we had a rad time at The UMS this year, and we highly encourage you to check out all the bands we mentioned, all the acts we live-interviewed with Zach Dahmen, and any of the performers on the local lineup in general. Because if there’s one thing we came away with after four days of music-hopping insanity, it was with community- from the performers themselves, to the UMS staff and volunteers, to the eager ticket holders bouncing from show to show hoping to find their next favorite band- Denver came out to support its own. Whether we were playing beach volleyball in the artist tent during a downpour or running from the main stage with our best budz to get back to Broadway for a set (those smarter ones took the Meow Wolf bus), this weekend really showcased you- the local music supporter. And for that, we and apparently Governor Hickenlooper, thank you.

Things We Found at Black Lips' Denver Show: Nudity, Silly String, & Mosh Pits

Black Lips filled the Gothic Theatre with some rowdy ass behavior last Friday night. The wildness started as soon as the doors opened and Dirty Few took the stage. This local band is a well-seasoned Denver favorite, often frequenting the Hi-Dive’s stage. As audience members filled the venue, Dirty Few set the vibe, ripping guitar solos, slapping on tambourines, and head-banging around stage. They wrapped their set with a bold stage dive into a not-so-crowded pit, making the impossible, possible. 

The second opener, Timmy’s Organism took the stage next. This band hails from Detroit City and embodies a rock and roll sound that feels like it is whacking you over the head with a jagged rusty edge. They are the band you want to party with, but fear you might die while trying to keep up. Song by song, frontman Tim Lampinen introduced new stage props, like a bouquet of flowers he used to play his guitar with, silly string he pretended to shoot out of his nose, green paint he splattered all over his face, and finally a large paper-mâché head mask of a one-eyed baby monster thing that he proceeded to rip the hair out of.  

By the time Black Lips took the stage, the room was packed and buzzing with eagerness for them to begin their set. Black Lips formed in 1999 in Dunwoody, Georgia. Since then they have released nine albums, their most recent being Satan’s Graffiti or God’s Art?, which was produced by Sean Lennon. Black Lips’ shows certainly have a high level of rowdy expectation from fans, as their record promises at least one random and crazy stunt to go down. As soon as they took the stage, literally almost the entire audience formed into one massive mosh pit. Quite frankly, it was challenging to keep track of each of the five band members unique stage antics throughout the rest of their show. The stand-out moment of last Friday night’s performance, however, was when Cole Alexander (guitar/vocals) dropped down and stuck his dick in the horn players saxophone. Yep.

So here’s the thing. Even if you don’t like their music (thought you'll be hard-pressed not to), I suggest at some point you take the time to see the debauchery that is a Black Lips show. Check out a one of there tunes, “Bad Kids” here!

Premiere: Retrofette's New Music Video For "Skeletons" Will Make You Shake Your Bones

Denver’s synth-pop new wave four-piece Retrofette formed just a year ago, but in that time, they’ve managed to build quite a following after the release of their debut EP I Don’t Mind. In 2016, the band, comprised of Sean Culliton, Xavier Provencher, Ben Weirich, Dylan Johnson, played two sold-out shows at Denver’s Hi-Dive, opened for acts like Magic Sword and Mark Mallman, and jumped back into the studio to record more music. Today, they dropped their first music video for the tune “Skeletons.” Watch the premiere below:

The track “Skeletons” is actually on the band’s debut EP. It was mixed and mastered at The Blasting Room in Fort Collins. Chris Beeble helped the band record vocals and mix the tune, while the rest of the song was recorded and produced by Sean Culliton and Xavier Provencher. Sean also takes writing credit on the track. And Hidden Woods Media braved the cold to film the video.

Said the band about the "Skeletons" video, “For the shoot of this music video, we watch our heroic dancing skeleton survive below-freezing weather and a few awkward encounters with the police of North Denver. His struggles were the real life illustration of what the song ‘Skeletons,’ and in a greater scope the whole concept of Retrofette, is all about. We make music because we want to see people dance in spite of their everyday problems. Maybe you're a skeleton that doesn't feel love. Maybe you're a skeleton that doesn't feel wanted. Maybe you're a skeleton who doesn't feel its face because you're wearing a latex suit in the middle of a blizzard. Whatever the problem, Retrofette plays music for people who want to escape for a minute and get sweaty on the dance floor.”

And just why does Retrofette think getting your own bones up to dance is so important?

Said Xavier, “I think dancing is the most basic and maybe primal form of human celebration. I love being able as a musician to give that to an audience. I love watching people be able to drop whatever their day has done to them and celebrate together. It’s also maybe a bit self-fulfilling. Lyrically, I feel I can get a little dark and down on the world. Setting those ideas to dance beats and watching people get down while you expound your sorrows onstage is the weirdest and most satisfying sort of therapy. I like the idea of people celebrating both happiness and sorrow.”

Retrofette’s “Skeleton” video release show is tonight, June 9th at Denver’s Fort Greene Bar with DJ Erin Stereo, and promises to be an intimate viewing experience.

Added Xavier, “We're so excited about this video release because it’s a brand new platform for us to share what we do with the world. We genuinely think that synth pop is a genre that the Coloradan people are missing out on, and can't wait to show everyone why they should be listening to it!”

So make sure to get yourself over to Denver’s Fort Greene Bar tonight and dance! Retrofette play Boulder’s Lazy Dog June 15th, followed by Denver’s Westword Music Showcase and The Underground Music Showcase. They’re also heading back into the studio to record some new music soon, and we’re stoked to see what those sessions bring.

A Magical Midnight Carnival: Esmé Patterson, Kitty Crimes, and DéCollage Get Wild At The Hi-Dive

Wizards danced, Mylar dolphin balloons bobbed above the microphones, giant cellophane-wrapped cardboard crystals sparkled from the stage, the costumes were loud, and the energy was palpable. The crowd packed the house to welcome Esmé Patterson back home to Denver on Sunday night for a show at the Hi-Dive along with local favorites Kitty Crimes, joined by the Blondetourage, and DéCollage.

Not only was the show high energy, the artists exuded themes of love, acceptance, and pride throughout the night. Kitty Crimes introduced one of her songs by saying, “This song is about being gay as f*ck!” Esmé Patterson introduced another, saying, “This song is about having the courage to be exactly who you are...” Each time the crowd roared with delight.

The evening also illustrated the sense of community within the Colorado music scene. Natalie Tate, another local favorite songwriter and performer from the Denver scene, joined both Esmé Patterson and Kitty Crimes for harmonies. The pairing of Patterson and Kitty Crimes on the same bill celebrated their former band Harpoontang. In addition to past projects, the show recognized the loss from the community. One of Patterson’s new songs honored the life of Tyler Despres, the guitarist for the Gin Doctors, whom the community unexpectedly lost late last year.

Patterson alternated tunes from her recent 2016 release of We Were Wild with a fair number of brand new ones. Her performance featured more experimental sounds on guitar through her pedalboard, feedback against her amp, and manipulating her guitar in unexpected ways, like dragging the strings against her mic stand. Based on her performance, it seems likely that a new album is underway. Based on the new tunes and the crowd’s reaction to them, the possibility of a new album is bound to be a solid addition to any record collection.

If you missed Esmé Patterson this time, you can catch her again in July when she headlines the Underground Music Showcase, which is happening in Denver from July 27th-30th. Millennial Wise: Chloe Tang’s 'Passion//Aggression'

Louis CK, the brilliant comedian and social critic, has a bit in which he explains why a 50-year-old garbage man is more interesting than any 21-year-old with four degrees (or something to that effect). The bit is spot on, though like most philosophies, it does have its exceptions. Sometimes this baby boomer meets a millennial who feels wise beyond their years, and beyond “interesting” to the point of being rather fascinating. Though I haven’t met Chloe Tang in person, listening to her new EP Passion//Aggression is like meeting a young person who exceeds expectations and defies stereotypes.

The five-song disc begins quietly, and overall, the feel of the EP is just a bit more introspective than rocking. Still, each of the songs has a drive and momentum that’s infectious. “No One Will” has a lilting beginning, a building verse, and a breakaway chorus marked by its relatively stark instrumentation. Like several of the songs here, it’s about love gone awry, regret, and acknowledgement of the good in a sad situation. It’s a hallmark of all these songs that shows how a young woman can be wise: looking at herself as well as her lover, asking important questions, and sparing herself nothing in her reflections on the scene described. This girl pulls no punches, even when they’re aimed at herself.

The second song, “Electrified,” is one of my favorites for several reasons: as befits the title, it rocks at least as hard as any of the other tracks, it has a killer chorus, and I love a song that declares independence from a relationship that was more unhealthy than the other way around, or at least that’s what this listener got from the lyrics. Maybe Tang herself would tell me I read it wrong, but that’s another great thing about these songs: for the most part, her lyrics are sparsely imagistic and leave at least something to interpretation and imagination.

“Forgive You Again” is the release’s centerpiece, the first single, and there’s a great video you should watch: I defy any sentient person to resist choking up a little seeing it; I certainly did. The song itself is a power ballad with a kind message: “When ghosts return/we always learn to find a way to balance and burn/They will make you confess your worst and your best/but maybe they’ll forgive you again.” It’s an undeniably sweet and powerful song; it also features what’s been dubbed the “Millennial Whoop”: a wordless refrain that uses the fifth and third of a major scale. When I chatted with Chloe on the phone, I mentioned this, and she was genuinely surprised that she’d used this device she’d never even heard about. To me, that’s further proof that she is overall a genuine and sincere soul; there’s no guile in her songwriting, just a lot of heart, and a songwriter doesn’t exist who hasn’t used common devices like this, whether consciously or not.

“Tell Me I’m Wrong” returns to the theme of self-examination and self-confrontation. Like I said, Chloe pulls no punches with lines like, “My excuse is I wasn’t awake” and “I woke up every day with a lie and a bluff.” Again, it’s a song that begins quietly, builds through the verse, and hones in with a powerful chorus, like having a frank conversation with oneself.

The EP’s closer, “Till I Get Up,” is in a lot of ways the strongest song here. It begins with a groovy soul bassline and proceeds to rock righteously through the verse and chorus. The lyrics stress persistence through difficulties leading to a strong resolve, and the overall result is a song that feels like an anthem you want to shout along with. “It’s me against myself and all my ghosts;” “And it keeps pushing waiting for me to make a fuss/but I breathe, I breathe, I breathe till I get up.” Tell it, sister!  

Chloe Tang is indeed 21 years old, and I didn’t ask her much about her education, but I don’t think she has any degrees yet, let alone four: she currently studies songwriting at CU Denver, and went to a charter arts school in her native state of Arizona prior. She began playing piano and singing at the age of five, and started writing songs at about age 15. She grew up on folk (her Dad’s influence), is a fan of James Bay, Kaleo, Of Monsters and Men, and Amber Run, and has been lately getting into classic rock. She also confesses a love of “corny pop from the eighties.” I may not share all her tastes, but I’m sure we could have at least one long and fascinating conversation about music, and yes, about life: she might even teach me a thing or two! I’m definitely going to be at her EP release show at the Hi-Dive this Thursday March 9th because after listening to this young woman’s music, I just have to see what she does with it live. "Like A Bat In A Tent": Philly's Mannequin Pussy Talk Politics, 'Romantic', & Why They Love Colorado

Last week, Philadelphia's Mannequin Pussy owned the stage at Denver’s Hi-Dive. World got you numb? Mannequin Pussy cuts through the sh*t and wakes up every nerve ending in your body. I was enamored by this band's raw and authentic expression of the world around them. Mannequin Pussy blends multiple music musical styles together including rock, punk, pop, and grunge. I had the chance to talk to members Marisa (vocals/guitar) and Thanasi (guitar) before the show. Their four-piece also includes Bear (bass) and Kaleen (drums). The band released their album 'Romantic' this past October, and Stereogum dubbed the outfit as a “2016 Band To Watch.” Read on:

At what point did you decide to start this band?

Marisa: Thanasi and I have been friends since elementary school in Connecticut. In 2012, I asked him to start the band with me. It was a pretty new idea. Thanasi had always been in bands. I didn’t really start playing music until later. When I moved back to the East Coast I asked him to play with me.  

What made you move the band to Philly?

Marisa: Thanasi convinced me that was where we should move. We had a lot of friends who lived there. It was very clearly the kind of creative community we were looking for.

What's the difference between the creative community in Philly VS New York?

Thanasi: New York is a little more competitive in a bad way. In Philly it’s competitive- everyone is so talented but also friends with each other, and everyone's support and driven to make better, cooler music. In New York everyone is just hustling trying to survive as a band.

You guys completely break out of every genre box someone could attempt to put you in. Is your hodge podge sound more accepted in Philly then it was in New York?

Thanasi: I honestly feel like we're the only band that does this in Philly. It was never a conscious decision to [have this sound]. It never felt weird to us to have different types of songs. There are definitely specific music scenes in Philly, but there are not hard lines. It never feels too clicky.

I hate to ask this question... but I’m going to. How did you come up with the name for this project?

Marisa: It was something I heard a friend say. I used to have a show house in Boulder called “Goth House.” We would have a lot of parties and shows there. One night a bunch of us were drunk on the porch spitting out drunken band names and someone said “Mannequin Pussy.” It stayed in my head forever.

So this was in Boulder, Colorado?

Marisa: Yeah- I lived in Boulder for five years actually. That’s a huge reason why I think a play music now. A lot of my friends were involved in the small music scene that was there. It was small, but it was a very energetic and important music scene.

I was cracking up reading your “About” section on Facebook: “Like a bat in a tent.” Tell me more about that band defining statement.

Thanasi: We just sound exactly like that- all fluttery and spastic.

Marisa: We have a chaotic element, you know, like trying to escape from something.

When did you start your current tour?

Marisa: We started our tour in October. We are pretty lucky and excited to be playing [at] all of our stops. I am really excited be in Colorado. It kind of feels like a homecoming show. We are having Thanksgiving there with our friends. It’s one of the shows we’re most excited about.

What has been the craziest thing that's happen to you guys so far on the tour?

Marisa: We were on tour in the middle of the country on election night. That was a really interesting show. We were playing in this bar in Oklahoma city. There were no TVs in there, so everyone was just on their phones refreshing and refreshing, waiting to check results. You could just feel the tension. By the time we were leaving the show to go stay with our friends it had been announced that Trump had won. It felt like a very surreal night.

What was it like playing that night?

Marisa: I felt more nervous to play. Playing is normally a cathartic release, and I normally don’t think about what's happening in my life or what’s happening in the world. That night and the night after, I couldn't stop thinking about the election and about the people in my life that were incredibly afraid. We feel like we have an immerse responsibility as artists to be cultural and political critics. So how is that going to shape our art moving forward, you know?

'Romantic' is extremely raw and authentic, capturing words that explain challenging human emotions. What cultural events inspired this album?  

Marisa: We wrote this album during the election cycle. All these attitudes, beliefs, and experiences are kind of shaped out of the last two years [when] we have been bombarded by the election. It’s [been] like a huge distraction. You have to deal with a two-year-long popularity contest before you get to see what's to come. I think there has been an anxiety building in all of us. On this tour particularly, we have noticed people really wanting to talk to us about the content of our music, our politics and beliefs, or the way certain songs on the album have touched them. For us as artists, that's the most remarkable thing to experience: When someone not only listens to something that you've made, but connects to it in a way that might really stay with them. It makes you feel a little bit less alone.

Denver's Last of the Easy Riders Releasing Vinyl LP On UK's Agitated Records

Denver’s Last of the Easy Riders are one local act making a lot of noise at home and over in the UK. Comprised of Mitch Mitchem (drums/percussion/vocals), Bradley “Blue Moon” Grear (guitar), Big Byrd Minarik (guitar/backing vocals), and Dan “Rain Child” Duggan, this crew formed about a year ago with a shared vision: to create cosmic rock’n’roll.

Though based in Colorado, the “high country folk rock and Southwestern psych” outfit are putting out a sweet, orange-swirl limited edition 12” on UK’s Agitated Records this month. The release is the band’s debut LP: a self-titled, six-song record that dropped digitally back in February of this year. The vinyl will be released November 18th, and you’ll be able to purchase it for yourself here. It’s the sort of album you’d find yourself listening to on the open road while you’re cruising to Joshua Tree headed "find yourself" in the desert: psych-heavy with killer strings, drippy vocals, and thumpin’ rock beats.

Evan Holm & The Restless Ones have managed to produce tracks that are silky smooth, soulful, and show a balanced maturity of gratifying writing and performance with “Good Old Days” and “Long Gone”. The reverb on these tunes is so comforting that it’s almost as though the alleviating effects of the music were made sonic. It is beautiful music. The group is releasing two new songs this week from the EP as well, "What I Know" and "You Are You".

Since “Good Old Days” and “Long Gone” were recorded live, we already have a sense of how tight the group is. It’s no surprise then that the five-piece have already played some major Denver gigs, and even had a UMS spot this summer.

Behind the 777 Album Set, an LSD Trip, & 'Resurrection': Our Interview with Clay Rose, Frontman of Gasoline Lollipops

Recently, I had the chance to talk with Clay Rose, the frontman of Colorado's alternative country/folk-punk group Gasoline Lollipops. With the help of producer John McVey and Gregory Alan Isakov violinist Jeb Bows, the GasPops have been putting the finishing touches on their upcoming album Resurrection, thus tying together their 777 album set. Clay and I discussed the band name, the intersection of life and death, and how their music speaks to the evolution of the human soul. Read on:

You’re settled in Boulder now, but where are you all from?

All over the map: I grew up between Boulder and Nashville, our guitar player Donny comes from Chicago, and our bass player Brad is from Niceville, FL. Brad’s the nicest guy you’ve ever met. Adam’s from Pittsburgh, and our fiddle player, Jeb, is from Ward, CO.

Gasoline Lollipops has been a functioning musical machine since 2009. How did you all come to be what you are now?

I’m the last original member of the band; Jeb is another original member, but he’s generally on the road a lot with Gregory Alan Isakov or Brandi Carlile. So whenever he’s not on the road, he’s playing with us.

Boulder has an incredibly eclectic music scene, how did you all come to settle there?

There was no conscious decision to do that. Although, when I moved back here from Nashville in 2002, the music scene was pretty happening, with lots of smaller venues and a wide array of musical styles being played. But, like its architecture, Boulder's music scene has become more homogenized. So now I drive a lot, playing in places like Fort Collins and Denver.

You’ve got quite a diverse string lineup, with one of my favorites, the stand up bass. How did you come to choose this lineup?

It’s a very natural process. If you don’t try to sound like anything, you’re going to end up sounding like like what you listen to. It’s an extremely diverse collection, and I never try to control how any of the players of the band sound. If I like their style and what I’m hearing, I bring them into the band. Donny has a country/rockabilly background, Brad is from classical jazz, Adam is very punk rock, and Jeb has bluegrass-gypsy feel. I like all those kinds of music, and I listen to all of it. So when you put it together, you get something vaguely familiar and extremely real.

You’re classified as “dirt floor folk with the energy of rebelliousness of punk”. That’s a very colorful description of your music. Is that a description that you guy came up with?

The “dirt floor” saying comes from the style of playing where the musicians would stomp through the floor down into the dirt. Our sound sets us up for that kind of genre.

If you could categorize Gasoline Lollipops' sound by a meal or type of food, what meal would it be?

Holy crap, well it wouldn’t be anything I’d want to eat. Maybe Tex Mex with a scoop of ice cream and cinnamon schnapps poured all over it. We also came up with an acronym for our genre called PAFC*R (punk alternative folk country rock). So that’s a good way to describe us.

Speaking of food, your band name, Gasoline Lollipops, elicits a very visceral reaction, if you ask me. Where does the name Gasoline Lollipops come from?

It comes from LSD, to be honest with you. Actually, the name came way before the band. It came from eating LSD with a friend back in high school, sitting around coming up with band names. I don’t even think I played guitar at the time. The name came up and it stuck with me, like, “Man, if I ever come up with a band, I’m going to name it Gasoline Lollipops”. I think the band kind of ended up growing into our name. We play things that are sweet and sincere, on one hand, and explosive on the other. It really is lyrical folk punk.

I hear you guys are a fairly superstitious group who dabble in the supernatural from time to time. For example, your “777” album mantra. Would you mind talking more about that?

Yes, superstition rock, which more stems from a gambling addiction. 777 will save your life, you know, when you pawn off the last penny of your chipped college fund. So 777 in that regard, is the same kinda deal as Jesus. Or Elvis, if you’re in Vegas. In Vegas, Elvis and Jesus are the same person. So that’s where all lines intersect, in Vegas.

You guys have two albums released already; 'Dawn' and 'Death'. And your upcoming album is 'Resurrection'. Will you continue your 777 theme after that last release?

No, so the 777 deal is that there are 7 songs on each of the 3 albums. So we’re hoping that once Resurrection is released, that will spark the second coming of Jesus or Elvis… or both.

And when will 'Resurrection' be released?

Nothing is set in stone yet. We keep vacillating between Halloween and Valentine’s Day.

How else does your belief in the supernatural play into your music? What other themes pop up in your music?

I definitely sing about damnation a lot. I sing about gambling, devils, angels, and resurrection, but I always have to believe in resurrection, even in the darkest songs. I gotta put in at least a little peppering of that into each song.

Would you consider yourself a religious group at all?

(Laughs) [We’re] absolutely not religious; we’re the most hedonistic band you can think of. It’s just writing about life experiences, but I have to put it in the context the masses can relate to. Many people in this culture think in a dualistic nature. They want to know if you’re talking about light or dark, black or white. So you have to use that language, but I’m really just talking about the evolution of the human soul.

Are there any songs in particular that you would recommend for somebody who is interested in these themes?

Definitely- listen to the songs “Resurrection,” “Devil's in the Ace”, and “Cannonball”.

Do each of these albums tie-in together, concept wise? Or are they completely different?

Not completely different. Like I said, I try to speak in dualities in practice, but I tried to make Dawn the more idealistic album, and Death the more jaded "falling into darkness" album. Resurrection will kick off where Death left off, but will redeem itself back into the light… hopefully.

Are you working on any new music?

Yeah, we are definitely bringing a lot of new music into our live shows that are not even in Resurrection. We’ve probably got half of our next album already written. We can’t stay in one genre for too long, so it’ll be something new.

You just played at Underground Music Showcase this summer, and at an erotic novel convention in Las Vegas. Any other upcoming performances?

We’re playing one huge show at Caribou Room on September 23, and we’re really excited about that. It’s a fairly new venue and they’re really going all out for it.

If you could pick one of your creative idols to sit down with, alive or deceased, who would you choose?

It would be Leonard Cohen. I wouldn’t want to say a word. I would just want to sit in silence and look at him.

Great answer. So lastly, any final sentiments? Anything you’d like the world to know?

Just that the Gasoline Lollipops love you.

Boulder’s progressive rock/fusion quintet Eminence Ensemble play Quixote’s tonight, supported by “revved-up Montana soul outfit” The Hawthorne Roots. Indie acoustic/folk artist Geoffrey Louis Koch has made his way from Nashville to Boulder for a show at The No Name Bar tomorrow. Koch’s most recent release, Follow The Voices, has been described as “symphony meets indie folk”. Geoffrey has shared the stage with some big names in the singer/songwriter world, including one of our favorite locals, Gregory Alan Isakov. So make sure to head over to the big brown door tomorrow night and take a listen!

Steve Itterly and The Blind Spots at The Laughing Goat in Boulder 8PM-Close

New York’s female-fronted five-piece rock band The Blind Spots are opening things up at the LG tomorrow evening. The group is best known for their “eclectic library of vintage keyboard sounds” and frontwoman Maddy Walsh’s electric vocals. Following their set, Boulder folk and blues artist Steve Itterly will take the stage, making for quite the lineup mix. Itterly comes from a country/delta background, so you can count on those sounds too! This should be a fun show.

Planet Bluegrass’ Rocky Mountain Folks Festival in Lyons- Various Sets & Times

Earlier this week, we brought you a feature on Planet Bluegrass’ awesome Song School, which ends today in anticipation for the 26th annual Rocky Mountain Folks Fest in Lyons. Some of the national talent on this year’s bill includes Andrew Bird, Conor Oberst, and The Decemberists. The festival opens tonight with the Folks Songwriter Showcase, where talented artists from around the globe compete for a spot in the weekend’s lineup. Multi-instrumentalist and indie folk musician Ben Barron will open up the LG stage tomorrow night. He’ll be bangin’ on the banjo for some tunes, followed by the string trio Jam key JAM. Boulder’s Hootenanny at Bankers Cabin in Gold Lake in Ward- Various Sets & Times

Speaking of festing, there’s a party going down in Boulder this weekend with a slew of great local acts on the bill. Conscious Alliance, an awesome nonprofit that you should read more about here, is throwing its 9th annual Hootenanny in Ward, CO. Ben Hanna, Danny Shafer, Gasoline Lollipops, and The Farmer Sisters are just a few of the talents that will be gracing the stage over the course of the weekend, and tickets are only $50 for the whole shebang! All donations and some ticket profits go toward the goal of providing 10k meals to those in need, so get out there and support great music for a great cause!

The Final Day of The UMS 2016 Showcased Powerful Females & More

The final day of UMS 2016 started off slow, which was unsurprising given the late night slew of shows on Saturday. Small crowds of zombies, still with a rock’n’roll twinkle in their eyes and glow stick goo on their shoes, wandered into the main stage area around 2PM in a noticeably lower attendance than the day before, but no matter. There was shade. And shade at The UMS is a hard commodity to come by.

As I wandered around South Broadway in those early Sunday hours, I found myself reflecting on what was overall an amazing weekend in local music. Having the chance to bounce around from venue to venue for four straight days checking out bands was this girl’s dream come true. It was a heck of a weekend Denver! So let’s chat about yesterday’s shows:

My favorite thing about Sunday at The UMS was the number of female-fronted performances I saw. Say what you will; the music industry is still very male dominated, whether you’re looking at artists or those behind the scenes. But ladies repped The UMS stages yesterday, from the smaller venues to the main shabang.

Let’s start with Millicent. Fronted by Emily Knurr, Millicent is a vibe pop project making Colorado waves. Knurr delighted a growing crowd at 3 Kings Tavern, many of whom admitted to being pulled in by the sound of her voice echoing outside of the venue. Her deep and magnetically smooth vocals pulled people close to the stage as she sang songs from her last EP Deux, a Drake cover, and some of her newer music (which has been all over OpenAir, so tune in!) She was stellar.

Shady Elders took the stage next, an indie rock/dream pop four-piece out of Denver fronted by Fox Rodemich. Rodemich also plays lead guitar and soon after starting the set, she turned the dance floor into a vibey haven of indie. 3 Kings was really the spot to be for indie over the weekend, and Shady Elders fit right in. They had an impressive crowd for an early Sunday show, and kept people groovin’.

Adia Victoria played the main stage mid-afternoon Sunday. The Nashville-based songwriter and vocalist's most recent album, Beyond the Bloodhounds, was produced by Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Sleater Kinney). Her lyrical poeticism wrapped us up in Victoria’s world, which she describes as, “falling in love, dealing with loss, confusion, anger, love, and loving myself”. Victoria had an Erykah Badu sound wrapped in a tasty indie sandwich. It was delicious.

Ready to rock, I rolled to the Hi-Dive, where The Velveteers were already performing. Frontwoman Demi Demitro was ablaze onstage in a glittering golden jacket belting out powerful heavy rock tunes. Her golden curls covered her face, giving her a mysterious glow that you couldn’t look away from. She jumped around stage while slamming on lead guitar and headbanging with the crowd, and her drippy choruses were catchy and captivating. Demitro is one lady you have to see live, Denver.

Cold River City.

Cold River City, who dropped their latest full length album Thank You. Sorry. Love You. earlier this year, took the Hi-Dive stage in the early evening. The Boulder/Denver five-piece, who describe themselves as, “the love child of funky soul and dirty blues” brought a party. With grooving bass lines, strummy licks, and frontwoman Emma Fields’ killer voice, the crowd boogied throughout their set. Fields jumped between guitar, shakers, lead vocals, and even some toy instruments. CRC rocked, and they kept the evening moving along with a fun energy.

San Fermin took the main stage next, a Brooklyn-based eight-piece who are as fun to watch as they are to listen to. The group has had a lot of steam behind them recently, thanks to their release Jackrabbit, and after hearing them live, it’s easy to see why. With a robust horn section (John Brandon, Stephen Chen), Rebekah Durham’s violin playing, and lead vocals running between Charlene Kaye and Allen Tate, this group brought incredible instrumentation to the outdoor stage that echoed throughout the bellows of Broadway.

Polica then closed out the main stage as Sunday’s headliner. The brainchild of Channy Leaneagh, Polica played across their catalogue for their set, but are currently touring on their release, United Crushers. And that’s fitting since the Minneapolis-based project crushed their set! With dual drummers and Leaneagh’s commanding vocals, Polica was the perfect outdoor close to a great weekend of music.

Once the main stage shuttered shut and the crowds funneled to smaller venues, I took to the Hi-Dive again, where Denver’s BANDITS were straight shredding. Sibling duo John and Lulu Demitro are the creators of this three-piece, with the multi-talented Andrew Oakley on drums. John (guitar/vocals) was an alluring showman, with a rock’n’roll edge that kept us locked on the band’s set wondering what he would do next. Whether he's scratching his guitar on the monitor or running into the crowd, energy at any BANDITS set is guaranteed to be high. And Lulu, on bass and vocals, was equally powerful in her stage presence, holding down tight bass lines, and getting the crowd to sing along with her on tunes like, “Kill Tonight”, which she’s described as a track inspired by “a modern day Jekyll and Hyde, a psychotic way of looking at yourself and letting the crazy side take over”. The crazy did take over, as BANDITS slayed into the final night of the festival.

Beyond all of these female-fronted acts, I caught some rockin’ dudes on Sunday as well that are obviously worth mentioning. Denver’s DeCollage helped people get weird with their opening set of the day, with crazy visual props, a live painter onstage, and even a dancing oyster. Ian Cook brought a beautiful grace to the stage with his amazing cello playing and a set of songs inspired by fossils and dinosaurs. Modern Leisure, who we recently wrote about here, had a super chill and groovy set at 3 Kings that kept the afternoon moving along nicely. And last but not least: Denver’s The Yawpers managed to not only rile up a half-dead crowd into a riotous dance party of foot-stompin’, head shakin’ fun, but they somehow even got the sun to come out for their set. They brought life to the stage in more ways than one; you just gotta love these guys. Seriously- take a listen.

Day Three at The UMS: Are You Ready to Rip, Denver?

Alright UMSers. Saturday started off for me with a, “holy wow, is-it-really-this-epically-hot-outside?” kinda vibe.

I’m not scared. I will say it. I woke up Saturday morning exhausted from a 10+ hour day of awesome music the night before. I found myself really starting to wonder if I was going to be able to crush another non-stop day of tunes. Amidst my doubts, I quickly remembered that UMS was created by champions for champions. So I prepped up and started chugging water, coffee, and mimosas. The time was soon upon me. The first band I wanted to see was taking the stage only blocks away from where I pleasantly laid on my friend’s cozy couch. It was time to crush again.

The day was ripping away as I popped in and out of venues strewn along S. Broadway street. Each hosted different genres of music, from soulful singer-songwriters to thrashing heavy metal bands. It was all right there for me, beckoning, as I created my epic Saturday journey through The UMS land. But no matter where I was as the day continued, I found myself longing to return to the Hi-Dive.

The Hi-Dive is truly the beating heart at the core of The UMS. You think about her when you leave. You wonder what’s happening in her life when you’re not around. You make sacrifices in order to see her. You wait in line with other people who love her equally as much, just for a chance to hang out with her for a couple of hours. But at the end of the day, it’s all worth it, because once you’re in there, it feels so good. You stop worrying about all the other venues and you're there, you’re with her, in that pulsing core of it all.

Time truly warps while you’re in the Hi-Dive. Hours become minutes as you thrash around, dancing to show after show after show actually after show, stopping only for bathroom, drink, and picture breaks. The lineup last night at the Hi-Dive was fierce: Dudebabes, SPELLS, Dirty Few, Ned Garthe Explosion, and Bud Bronson & The Good Timers.

My favorite set of the night was Ned Garthe Explosion. They no doubt know how to party. In fact, they started off their set counting down as Garthe himself held up a disco ball and let it drop while the audience cheered, “3-2-1!” The band tossed out glow sticks and champagne bottles as confetti, and their homemade fog machine filled the air. Within what seemed like seconds, people were spraying champagne throughout the crowd. And by the second song, people had cut open their glow sticks in order to create what I like to call a galaxy party, as neon goo speckled the venue walls, and our bodies.

Hot damn that Hi-Dive! She takes you in. She fills you up, and then she spits you out exhausted to the bone, but with a smile on your face, and crazy-fun reeling in your head for days to come.  

Day three was an epic one for The UMS books. Who’s ready for round four? Sunday-funday here we come...

Marshall Poole: The band that is perfect for when you just wanna hang, but also wanna rock.
