Premiere: Rose Room's New Single “Fighting Feeling" Will Dig Into Your Bones

Self-proclaimed “electronic soul duo” Rose Room recently finished up recording 7 singles, which they’ve been periodically issuing. In their latest release, “Fighting Feeling,” the Boulder/L.A.-based pair, Thomas LaFond and Dmitry Bolotny, have sculpted an alluring tune with delightful influences (think Childish Gambino and Glass Animals). 

The single opens up with LaFond’s smooth, breathy vocals, backed up by Bolotny’s funky, electronic keys. When the chorus hits, LaFond’s sexy vocal range shines through, as instrumentals pick up and the song takes off with the catchy lyrics, “Some inclinations bout the world you built for them/ you took too much/ you took too much.”

The song unfolds into a narration about feelings; addictive feelings that entice and strangle. The track seems to follow a subject, and a voice hangs about which offers commentary that the subject is running from something. That sort of inner voice resounds throughout the tune instrumentally, as LaFord and Bolotony layer and escalate their instrumentals and vocals incorporating all sorts of stirring and soulful nodes.

After the second chorus, the song dives into a bridge that pulls listeners under. It’s murky and feels like we’re submerged below water, coming down from something. As the song continues, we swim up and the instrumentals and crescendo toward a soulful choral burst of air, booming the lyrics from that inner voice, “I know just what you need.” Is it a reprieve from the feelings? Is it facing the feelings? The track leaves this ambiguous, but its groovy vibe traverses many musical terrains and digs deep into your bones. You’ll want to listen again right away, so don’t be afraid to hit that repeat button.

Premiere: Listen to Moon Hammer's New "Unravelled" + the Band Tells Us How This Track Was Sewn Together

Denver’s Moon Hammer, an ever-changing collection of Moon Magnet-affiliated artists, is playing Denver’s Underground Music Showcase on Sunday, July 28th at 3 Kings Tavern at 6PM. In anticipation of their show, they decided to premiere their new song “Unravelled” with us today before it drops on all streaming services this Friday, July 19th. The song has been created and “destroyed” several times over to near its final completion, so take a listen:

“Unravelled” was mixed by Neil Lyons and frontman Reed Fox, and mastered at Moon Magnet Studios, but prior to that, a lot went into the actual writing and recording process of this track. Says Fox, “Moon Hammer is a writing collective and most of our shows feature a lineup of different members. Everyone can bring songs to the group to play and it's usually Megan Crooks (Ancient Elk) or Ishka Bee Phoenix (Ghost Tapes) because they're genius songwriters. Megan showed us her song ‘Unravelled’ two years ago and everyone was eager to bring it to life. Usually the songs are recorded and released quicker, but this one took longer because we kept reimagining it and adding stuff to it, which is ironic because it is the most minimalist recording I've ever been a part of. The process was a lot like the quote I'd never credit because it came from Bono: ‘Making records is like making sausages, the end result is palatable but you don't want to see how it's done.’ Basically we recorded a ton of things and all agreed it was best to scrap almost all of it.”

Oddly enough, “Unravelled” almost became a House track at one point in the process. “We recorded it live initially with Dylan Johnson (The Other Black/Dandu) on electronic drums. Derrick Bozich (House of Aura/Sound of Ceres) came over and was recording mellotron months later and since the drums were recorded through an SPDS and every drum pad sound was mono on one channel, Derrick re-recorded the drums on separate tracks. With this project, Neil and I email projects back and forth frequently so I sent it over to him and he remade the drums again and re-recorded some awesome 808 bass. I think it was our third reiteration of drums and bass. He made it sound incredible and chopped up Megan Crooks’ vocals and threw the samples on pads and played them like an instrument (just like you hear in the recording). Then he emailed it back and I made a House version of the song. We considered using it for the chorus when Neil and I met up again at his studio to mix it some more and ended up realizing the House version was a terrible idea.” says Fox.

So how did “Unravelled” finally become sewn together?

“We scheduled a session for Megan, Ishka, Jeremy Averitt (Esmé Patterson), and Kevin Netz (Jurassic Netz/Fever The Ghost) to come over to Moon Magnet Studios and record more stuff, because we still were unhappy with [the song], but little did we know that a version from a year prior was our favorite, and the one you hear now is pretty much that. Kevin recorded gazillions of synths and bass (again) on it. Jeremy recorded xylophone over the whole thing. Ishka recorded vocals. Months after that we listened back to the version from a year prior and realized that was the best version and that we just needed to release it. Then Neil and I met up at the Magnet and I tried to include all the people that had recorded on it which was virtually impossible because that version had scrapped everything.

What you hear now is Neil on the beat, vocal chops, and 808 bass. Neil, Jeremy Averitt, and I co-produced it. Neil did a ton of the snazzy creative things. Derrick's mellotron is on the end of it, and you can hear Kevin's synth on the chorus. Ishka's harmonies are on the chorus and Megan sang and wrote the song of course. Jeremy's Xylophone is on the intro. We kept exploring options and didn't realize the song had already been finished and ended up having to dig up an old project file to get back to how it was before we ruined it.” Fox told us. 

In the end, the complex, two-year recording process of “Unravelled” almost mirrors the lyrics Crooks wrote from the start. Adds Megan, “This song is about letting the force of change and chaos take control and gracefully bowing to its power with faith that things will fall back in place for the better. I wrote the [lyrics] on a whim two years ago, pulling the knowledge from the ether, not knowing I was preparing myself for exactly this time in my life.”

BolderBeat reached out to Bun Bun for an interview but as members Snarklet and Reedlet were on a space adventure, BolderBeat was forced to communicate with them through their manager Tarzancula interstellarly. Read on:

Tell us about Bun Bun & how the project came to be.

Snarklet is from Planet Saturn. She arrived here January 1st. Soon after, Reedlet & Snarklet got burritos at Los Marcelos & it was love at first sight. A month later, they went to San Francisco. It was raining in Japantown and underneath a mylar blanket, Reedlet asked Snarklet if she would stay on Planet Earth with him. She said yes! They decided to name their band Bun Bun when they noticed they were both wearing buns in their hair at the same time. They always match like that. It's never even on purpose. They also would like to clear up any rumors: they did not meet on Craigslist.

That’s pretty galactic. Talk to us about this track- what inspired it and where was it recorded?

Urban Bee” is the first song Bun Bun ever invented. “Urban Bee” is not just a song, it is a way of life for bees. It's an introduction into a new form of music, called BeeWave®, patented by Bun Bun. “Urban Bee” was controversially kicked off of Billboard's Hot 100 because it didn't have enough human elements and was clearly made for bees. So, in an effort to be more inclusive, Bun Bun made a second version of “Urban Bee” for humans to listen to which is what you can listen to today.

Originally though, most of the frequencies were made exclusively for bees' ears (ears belonging to bees on both planet Earth AND Saturn). Just try and listen to it. Critics say it is unfair for two SoundCloud rappers to control all of the music made for bees, [but] the fact of the matter is, no one else cares enough to make music exclusively for bees. Snarklet worked as a bee-whisperer on planet Saturn, so obviously she knows what she's talking about when she raps about bees. Reedlet and Snarklet recorded and produced the song at Moon Magnet Studios together while binging on honeycomb.

That’s like, so atroidal. Why did Bun Bun choose this track as their debut single for Earth?

“Urban Bee” is an ode to bees surviving in the city. Bun Bun thinks they are underrepresented and misunderstood, and truly beelieve [sic] that bees deserve to be saved.

Here are some interesting facts about bees: Some people think that honey is sticky because it's made of sugar when in fact, it's sticky because people can't stop touching it. Other misunderstandings about bees mostly revolve around whether bees eat the honey or use it as insulation in the hive. One last fact is that all bees you've ever seen are boy bees, beecause [sic] the Queen Bee kills off all the other girls to maintain her status. Humans never see the Queen Bee beecause [sic] she's in the hive, and frankly, pretty busy.

We beelieve [sic] you. What else can we expect from Bun Bun this year?

Bun Bun has six new songs and is performing them on planet Earth [as mentioned] at Elija Kane's "Stay Gold" Art Show at the State Room above the Buffalo Rose in Golden tonight at 8pm.

Anything else you’d like to add Tarzancula?

Bun Bun is currently [allegedly] feuding with Babelord, another band from both Denver and outer space. Babelord opened for Bun Bun on their tour around the Milky Way. It was annoying because they had to check all of Babelord's guitars every time they flew economy, so now they're feuding over Instagram. Bun Bun recently defeated Babelord in a basketball game at the rec center. It was a landslide.

Premiere: Denver's Boot Gun Debuts with a Bang with Two Singles & a New Music Video

Denver’s Boot Gun have entered the Colorado music scene with a serious bang. Today, the three-piece are releasing their debut single and video for “Virginia,” a high-energy rock’n’roll track with a Southern twang, and a rebellious video featuring a slew of Denver haunts to match. And folks, one thing’s for sure, the trio comprised of Keith Lawrence (guitar/vocals), Davie Landry (bass/vocals), and Cody Hart (drums), have brought the party.

“Virginia” was recorded and mixed by Todd Divel (The Yawpers, In The Whale, The Velveteers) of Silo Sound and mastered by Hans Liburd of Burdhouse Mastering. The video was directed and filmed by Colin Anders of Slice Cinematics (Nathaniel Rateliff & The Nightsweats, A Shadow of a Jaguar, Dragondeer). Boot Gun also featured several friends on the track’s instrumentals including Bullfrog Baugh on harmonica, who makes an appearance in the video about 40 seconds in, Sam Janik on guitar, and Bill McKay on organ and piano.

Says frontman Keith Lawrence about the track, "Virginia came to me in multiple dreams last summer. I showed the boys the main riff and they said ‘Sounds great. Where's the rest of the song?' I told 'em I had to go back to sleep to hear [and] see the rest of it. A few months and a couple of disco naps later, we had us a rock’n’roll ripper."

A ripper it is indeed. “Virginia” is a boot-stompin’ tune rife with slashing rips, harmonica twang, and a jangly toe-tappin’ keys solo that will force you on your feet. Some of that energy didn’t enter the track until the boys rounded things out in the studio though.

Says Keith, “As a band, we all believe that a song isn't finished being written until we record it. Todd at Silo pushed for certain creative ideas that we were able to let shine on these tracks. Having Bill McKay sit in on keys helped round out the sound and bring our musical intention into fruition."

Along with “Virginia” and their debut music video, Boot Gun also released their B side “Feels Like A Storm” today. While “Virginia” takes you on a wild ride, quite literally in the video, “Feels Like A Storm” is the moodier, heavy-hitting track from the trio.

Says Davie, “‘Storm’ is a song that we wrote collectively. It started with Keith singing but never felt completely right. So we argued and laughed, and laughed and argued, and I was forced to sing it… In the end, it became the beast that you're listening to today."

Premiere: Elektric Animals' "Vulnerable Thing" Digs Deep

There’s always been some sort of heaviness that accompanies the Rock genre; a pressure to make as much noise as possible. The tricky part is keeping the music grounded in the roots of its composition and lyrics. A lot of the time, the story of the song can become muddled in the making of it and what the band itself is trying to convey. Luckily, for Elektric Animals their song “Vulnerable Thing” not only deserves recognition, but shines a light on the future of what alternative rock can be, if only fought for with a little persistence and love for the craft. The Denver trio, comprised of Nick Sanders (vocals), Oscar Jara (guitar), and Jerrid Van Scoy (bass) recently formed and today, we’re proud to premiere their newest single:

“Vulnerable Thing” digs deep into the message that in life, you have a tendency to carry the past into the present. It can be both a force of positivity, or of negativity. Whether it’s the scars you’ve endured or the happiness you wish to see fulfilled, life can either make you or break the person you are destined to become. Elektric Animals decided to pour their souls about this aspect of life into this track. This band is fearless, yet honest, which reminds us that music is a treasure, not just a glimmer you can shove on a shelf somewhere.

The music industry at times seems to settle for uninspired music; music that only garners in split seconds of attention. Elektric Animals seem to be the opposite, creating music that involves fleeting moments and engraving them more permanently inside our heads. Not many bands or artists can take fleeting moments and engrave them like this, but this is a band who does so knowing that the only attention they crave is from the real stories they lead.

Premiere: Dream Feed's Music Video for "Hey Now" Is a Raw, Animated Look at Their New Music

Denver’s Dream Feed, formerly known as Miguel Dakota and the Differents, have had a busy year. You may remember frontman Miguel Dakota from season nine of America’s Got Talent, where he was a “Top 6” finalist and was offered a national tour with a backing band, but declined to remain in creative control of his work. Dakota continued on with his former project Miguel Dakota and the Differents, and this year, launched Dream Feed. The current band is comprised of Dakota on lead vocals and guitar, Ryan Wagner on lead guitar and vocals, Brian Nolan on drums, and Will Gaines on bass and vocals.

Recently, Dream Feed won the grand prize in the KTCL 93.3 and Pabst Sound Select “Demo Derby” contest with their track “Push and Pull.” Then, after this year’s Underground Music Showcase, Jimmy Siler of Tri Lakes Radio declared Dream Feed, “the best surprise of the festival.” The band also won the grand prize in last summer’s Road to Velorama contest (as Miguel Dakota and the Differents), beating out over 200 local bands and being awarded a performance spot in the Velorama Festival. Last month, on September 14th, the band dropped their debut track “Hey Now” from their self-titled record and subsequently sold-out their show that night at Syntax Physic Opera. Needless to say, their buzz has been building.

Today, we’re excited to premiere the band’s video for “Hey Now,” which was animated by Gary Tussey. Tussey is known for his work depicting musicians like Bob Marley and Miley Cyrus.

Said the band about working with Tussey, “We're a fan of all of Gary's work and saw some sketches he did of other musicians. We thought that the rough style fit well with the gritty, raw vibe of the track ‘Hey Now.’"

Though “Hey Now” is rather lyrically ambiguous, the band wants you to “focus on the raw, gritty, go-getter energy of it,” and there’s plenty of that to go around.

“Hey Now” was recorded at RiverRock Studios in Minneapolis by Eric Blomquist with the rest of the band’s upcoming debut record. The track was mastered by Randy Merrill at Sterling Sound in NYC.

Said Dream Feed, “[‘Hey Now’] was a lot of fun to record. At one point, we stood at one end of the studio screaming at the top of their lungs with the mic at the other end of the room.”

As for the rest of their 2018, the band is heading back in the studio at Third and James in Denver to continue recording new tunes. They’re planning shows and tours, and you can keep up with Dream Feed here.

Premiere: Future Joy's New Music Video for "Thirsty" Is Saxually Satisfying

Denver’s Future Joy are known for their sultry sax sounds. They’re self-proclaimed as a “saxually active glitch hop” outfit and 303 Magazine recently called their new self-titled record the “sweet spot between the heavy hitters and sexy saxophone serenades.” Today, the band dropped their music video for the track “Thirsty” and we’re stoked to premiere it for you here:

Future Joy, comprised of Zach Simms on saxophone (MLIMA) and Frederic Park on percussion, is a seriously tasty combination of all things electronic with sax, funk, and hip-hop thrown in. The result is saxually satisfying, and “Thirsty” feels like a banger from its opening riff.

Denver’s Annabelle, whose whisper vocals are featured on the track, stars in the video alongside dancers Gina and Sheridan. Annabelle choreographed the video, which was filmed and edited by Connor Tieulie. She also sings on much of Future Joy’s latest record.

The video’s location may look familiar to some Denverites- it was shot at Tetra Lounge and The Bolt Factory; later Jeffrey Charles Stanley added in the animations and graphics. These give the video a real psych party vibe.

Said Simms of filming the video, “We didn’t have too much planning- we just went with the flow of the locations and let the editors do their thing.”

The track “Thirsty” was recorded in Simms’ living room before the duo made their way to Side 3 Studios for finishing touches, which included Annabelle’s vocals and her opening a can of seltzer water because everyone knows LaCroix is the best way to booze these days.

Baltimore based pop-rock group Skyward Story have released their newest single from their upcoming EP New Beginnings. Premiere: King Eddie's Single "Making Flippy Floppy" Is the First Track Out from Moon Magnet's Upcoming UMS Cassette Release

This week, Moon Magnet Studios are releasing their Moon Magnet Composition Volume 4. Dropping this Friday July 27th before UMS, the record will be streamable on iTunes and Spotify but will also have a special cassette release. The tape will feature songs by Retrofette, Rubedo, Dandu, King Eddie, Venus Cruz, members of Esmé Patterson, Mini Mansions, JJUUJJUU, Sound of Ceres/Candy Claws, Ancient Elk, and OptycNerd. Today, we’re premiering a single from the record, King Eddie’s “Making Flippy Floppy,” a Talking Heads cover that the band also has a video for below. You can see King Eddie and more Moon Magnet artists at our UMS day party MoonSpoon this Saturday, July 28th from 12PM-4PM at Irish Rover. We sat down with King Eddie’s frontman Jay Mars and Moon Magnet Studios’ Reed Fox to learn more about the track and the cassette release:

Reed, what inspired Moon Magnet Studios to put together this record for the UMS?

Reed Fox: The UMS is a special time of the year- the best weekend of the year when all the Moon Magneteers come out to play. Every UMS we record a song. In 2013, we taped as many mylar space blankets together as we could and did an absurdist parade around Broadway one night of the UMS. Another year Riley Geare from Unknown Mortal Orchestra was hanging out at Moon Magnet and I recorded him playing drums on a song. That session morphed into what became the title track off of déCollage’s last album, Magnetize. One year we recorded an hour long acapella album of nonstop ambient vocal loops with members of Sunboy and Ancient Elk called Camp Forever Friends. In 2015 Cody Coffey, Megan Crooks, Ryan Schlichtman, and Derrick Bozich recorded a song called “Beautiful Mess.” The songs are always directly about the magic of UMS and on this one, Cody sings a play on words about UMS and “Ur a Beautiful Mess.” It’s finally getting released on this compilation! We wanted to do something special and include a bunch of our friends who are playing UMS on one comp. Laura Goldhamer ran a collective called Long Spoon and released a compilation in 2008 featuring Paper Bird, Ian Cooke, Kitty Crimes, and Griff from Inner Oceans. It had a huge impact on my group of friends and that was the impetus for starting Moon Magnet and releasing compilations in the first place.

What does a Moon Magnet collaboration look like with the artists featured? Do they connect with you or vice versa? Do you work with each artist on their songs? What does a relationship with Moon Magnet look like for a release like this?

Reed Fox: The collaborations are always different. Sometimes it’s a band hiring me to record their album, EP, or single. Sometimes it’s a singer songwriter with lyrics and a melody who asks me to create all of the music and drums. Sometimes it’s a bunch of friends hanging out and we hit record and it ends up becoming totally mind blowing. Everything at Moon Magnet is hyper-collaborative and it’s fun to get as many artists involved as possible. Here’s a Spotify playlist of most of the songs released on the label; there’s another with the 36 albums recorded in the studio with a link to stream on Spotify too. Neil Lyons and I run the licensing branch of Moon Magnet together. There’s currently 1,000 songs in our library and we synch them in film, television, and audio-visual works. It’s easy to submit your song or find the right song for your video on our site.

Jay- tell us a bit about your cover of “Making Flippy Floppy” from the compilation. Who did you work with for it and where was it recorded?

Jay Mars: I love covers that have little to no resemblance to the original. We screened the movie Stop Making Sense at my job at The Alamo Drafthouse and I was inspired by the raw energy of their performance and wanted to really make it our own. I started a mentorship at the University of Denver several months ago and this was the first track I produced under the guru-ship of Michael Schulze, the director of the music production program. I was listening to a lot of Bowie's Blackstar album and I think the production and performance is really influenced by that record- the drums more than anything; they're kind of dark and slippery. It's been truly amazing working with such a talented producer and mentor. Not just his fluency with the technology, but his willingness to suggest ideas and challenge your assumptions. I think that's what makes a great producer- the vision and ability to make connections and create moments in the music where you didn't see the opportunity. Kevin Netz (Yonbre) created all these crazy atonal textures on a Moog synthesizer that throw the entire track into orbit before it comes back into the chorus. I recorded the drums with Linton Wright at the Lamont School of Music and I tracked the vocals, synth bass, and guitars at Moon Magnet.

Who did the album artwork for the compilation? It’s so cool!

Reed Fox: Jacqueline Sophia Cordova did. Jacqueline can you talk about your work on this record?

Jacqueline Sophia Cordova: The Ancient.Future featured in this work is more than just my avatar and moniker, it is a philosophy and a way of life. It is shaped by the coalescing of ancient wisdom, magic, and mythologies with modern/future science and technology. It exists as a singular point in a non-linear understanding of space/time as the Eternal Now. Understanding existence as multidimensional, I see and experience past and future, and all dualistic concepts as happening simultaneously within a single event. My creative work is, ultimately, channeled work. I express through many mediums including visual art, costume and fashion, poetry, performance, ceremony, music, and dance. The collective journey toward understanding consciousness and reality is a defining theme in my work. Aesthetically, my work is compiled of imagery and information I receive through dreams, intuitive landscape, mystical experiences, ancient mythology and symbolism, modern science, future technology, the quantum realm, and artificial intelligence. Ancient.Future is deeply intimate work. I am continuously baffled and mesmerized by mere embodiment and what it means to be here; a merging of energy and matter into form. I often create literal self portraits, using myself as a subject, but all my work is an expression of my life journey, a sort of commentary to parallel my human experience.

Premiere: Whitacre Release Catchy New Folk Rock Tune "Fantasy"

Denver’s Whitacre, the five-piece rock project led by Paul Whitacre, have plans to drop new music this year and today, we’re premiering the band’s newest single, “Fantasy.”

Whitacre, which is comprised of Paul Whitacre (rhythm guitar/lead vocals), Chase Perry (banjo/keys/vocal harmonies), Mark Cunningham (drums), Kyle Miner (lead guitar/vocal harmonies), and Brent Perkins (bass), recorded the track at Colorado Christian University’s studio. “Fantasy” was produced by Nicholas Webber, who is also featured on vocal harmonies on the songs, with engineering by Toshi Jamang.

“Fantasy,” which starts out with some stompy percussion, is a feel-good folk rock tune primed for summer. Its thick strings and catchy chorus make it feel like a Lumineers-inspired ditty. Whitacre himself sings the instantly appealing and memorable chorus, “We could be/What people thought was fantasy/Only portrayed in the Hollywood movie screens/All the love you read about in all those fairytales/I will be your fantasy.”

Now, after 50,000 streams, a show with Pandas & People and Wildermiss at the Bluebird Theater, and talks of a national tour this summer, we really feel a sense of fans longing for new music. Premiere: Andy Sydow Releases New Single "Hearts Go On" From Upcoming Record

Colorado’s Andy Sydow has released his newest single today, “Hearts Go On.” The track, which feels Tom Petty-inspired with Americana and rock influences, will be on Sydow’s upcoming record Reasons For Departure.

Sydow actually began his music career at the University of Colorado in Boulder where he studied jazz piano performance. From there, he worked a short stint at Howl At The Moon as a dueling piano performer until he realized he wanted to pursue a life as a solo artist.

After releasing his works Trailhead (2015) and A Little Messed Up (2016), Sydow took to the road with the Andy Sydow band across the U.S. and Canada. Reasons For Departure, which will be released in May of this year, is Sydow’s most current project. He has worked on the album with Grammy-nominated and Colorado Music Hall of Fame inductee Chris Daniels.

Premiere: J.W. Schuller's Signature Humor Is Apparent In New Music Video For "No mud in Joyville"

BolderBeat first caught up with Boulder transplant and singer/songwriter J.W. Schuller about a year ago when he released his tongue-in-cheek video for “When I’m President.” Schuller is well-known for injecting his sense of humor into his work, and his recent release for his single “No mud in Joyville” is no different.

“No mud in Joyville” is the title track from Schuller’s newest record, which dropped this past January. The song’s somewhat nonsensical verses and catchy chorus are of Schuller’s signature style, one which keeps the listener wondering what he’ll say next and simultaneously has them singing along after a minute or two. In the song, Schuller imagines a place where there won’t be hate, deer ticks, and of course, mud among other things.

The video for “No mud in Joyville,” which we’re premiering here today, brings Schuller’s goofy sensibilities to light. The video features scenes of Schuller and his bearded nephew Jens Larson playing in front of an old stove in a living room of sorts, interspersed with abstract skeleton art sequences, and at one point a scene where they launch skittles from a drum in Larson’s mouth.

Said Jeff about the video, “I conceived and directed the video and it was shot on an iPhone 6 by the abstract artist Jaci Lee Reno, who I'm also lucky to call my wife. The flower and skeleton imagery in the video is an offshoot of my idea for the album cover. I've always been struck by Mexican Day of the Dead folk art and the juxtaposition of skeleton figures and flowers have been a recurring theme in videos and gig posters for me. It’s kind of an off-puttingly cute way to reflect on our mortality, I guess."

No mud in Joyville is the second release from Schuller as a solo artist, and is a follow-up to his 2013 release All Important Artists. His latest was recorded and mixed at Underwood Studios in Minneapolis by Mark Stockert, which are Schuller’s old stomping grounds.

Premiere: Grayson County Burn Ban Release Second Single From Upcoming Debut Record 'Better Neighbor'

Denver’s Grayson County Burn Ban first came together in 2014 after frontman Austen Grafa was on the road with another Colorado band and decided he wanted to combine two of his favorite genres: country and rock’n’roll. Having grown up in Texas, Grafa was inspired by songwriters like Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Terry Allen, and Robert Earl Keen. After teaming up with fellow Denver musicians Nate Wilson, Travis Page, Brian Beer, and Tyler Brewer (Ned Garthe Explosion), GCBB was formed and Grafa began using his influences to craft what is now considered the band’s “campfire country” sound.

This January, GCBB are releasing their debut record, titled Better Neighbor. The title track from the 12-song release is already out with an accompanying music video (see above), and one that is hard for any Denverite not to laugh along with. It details (rather sarcastically) some of the trials of Denver city life, like trying to park in Cap Hill, or the frustration many have faced when finding recyclable beer cans in the trash bin after day-drinking in Cheesman Park. The song’s refrain, “Are you an idiot? Or just an asshole?” will have you laughing as the band members experience other annoyances while venturing around their neighborhood and asking you to be the exact thing the title of their new record suggests.

Today, the band has released their second single and accompanying video for their song “Up Here.”

Animated by artist, Sarah Letteny, the video follows a character slowly climbing up a ladder in black and white while reflecting on the world down below before it falls through a psychedelic-colored sky back to its colorless reality. As the chorus repeats, “I’m higher than I’ve ever been/looking down at this little world I’m in/Everything is making sense/but I don’t know if I should be alone up here,” things like money and cars appear just out of reach of the video’s character before it crashes through the clouds.

Said Grafa about the video, “Sarah did an amazing job bringing our vision to life for this song, which is, as the lyrics state, all about being ‘a little too high,’ where you can see everything going on, but maybe you shouldn’t be so high alone.”

“Up Here” continues GCBB’s “campfire country” sound with Grafa’s rolling, storytelling vocals over guitar before it breaks into a full-band-at-your-favorite-dive-bar slow country jam.

Premiere: Augustus Release New Single "Demons" From Upcoming EP

In the dizzying internet world where all the different kinds of music thrown at you can be overwhelming, to the pop-dominated airwaves of half-dead radio, it is a touch of awesome nostalgia to hear simple, cool, straightforward rock and roll. The Boulder-based band Augustus are a call back to this music, the kind that simply exudes cool without trying.

“Demons” is the first single from the band’s forthcoming EP, which is due out in the spring of 2018. “Demons” is simple in its form as a rock song, but this is a good thing. The most important lesson I ever learned in music theory class was to write music and then have the theory make sense of it; in other words it’s ok to be simple when the music is actually good. Augustus have accomplished this powerful principle with “Demons,” making this band yet another solid one in the ever-growing pool of awesome talent in Colorado. With bluesy guitars under frontman Colin Kelly’s thick and reverb-y vocals, to the rock-heavy drum patterns on this track, “Demons” is a perfect wave of rock’n’roll.

“Demons” is the first of two singles to be released from the band’s Denver Art Institute sessions, where drummer Jay Elliot is an adjunct professor. Members Jim Herlihy (guitar) and Chad Mathis (bass) tracked their instruments live at DAI along with Elliot (drums) and students from an advanced audio course helped engineer the sessions, making this song bleed even more Colorado music community vibes. The vocals and lead guitar were tracked at Casa Nostra Studios in Boulder by Kelly (vocals/guitar), with mastering by Dominick Maita.

Premiere: Dear Me,'s Debut Single "The News" Is Catchy Comedic Pop

Denver’s indie rock trio Dear Me, are self-described “socially relevant, humorous songwriting.” Members Andrew Rogers (guitar/vocals), Sam Columna (guitar/vocals), and Jamie Beekman (keys/vocals) have been playing shows together since 2014, though they didn’t start gigging consistently until close to a year later when Sam told us, “It wasn’t until f*cking July 2015 when we agreed to play a gig at The Gothic with Chemistry Club that I honestly did not think we were ready for. But we somehow managed to survive and after that, shit was real.” It’s comments like these that kept me smirking during my recent chat with Sam about Dear Me,’s new single, which we’re stoked to premiere exclusively on BolderBeat from the band’s upcoming record Present Perfect.

“The News” is an undeniably timely tune in subject matter, and expresses a sentiment I think most of us can relate to: as informed as we want to be, the current media whirlwind of world news can be overwhelming at times and force us into one story before we’ve processed the others that came before it.

Said Columna about the track, “Part of me maybe wants to evolve past the magic of hearing something that you’re feeling expressed in a song- like it’s sort of cliche and basic and that makes it a character flaw. But every single time a song nails my inner monologue- dead to rights, word for word, kills me softly- it’s like a transformative experience. I’m reminded how lucky I am to be able to make art. If anything I make has that impact on anyone, then probably I am doing a good thing."

Sam continued, "[With “The News”] I was just hoping to capture some of the Groundhog Day-esque overwhelmed horror that I found myself feeling all the f*cking time. I actually wrote the hook, ‘I need something stuck inside my head besides the news,’ in like 2014 when I was a sunglasses salesman and I couldn’t afford to be in touch with my feelings at work or else my numbers would suffer. And that year planes disappeared out of the sky, Ebola happened, the Israel-Palestine conflict flared up, Michael Brown was murdered, there was that hostage crisis in Sydney… and yes I’m looking at a list of 2014 events right now... Robin Williams also died... and all of this happened to coincide with me falling in love with NPR, so I was hyper-aware of everything. And all of it was immediately politicized. There was no acknowledgement or time taken for human suffering- everything immediately felt like currency, or else like a weapon. I couldn’t f*cking deal with it. The hook [from “The News”] was super, ultra, mega-literal for me.”

Though the subject may seem a bit dark, Dear Me, manage to express Columna’s inner monologue of that time with a catchy hook and poppy vocal melodies, driving keys, and a strong percussive build interspersed with quick guitar breakdowns, while also weaving their stylistic humor within “The News.” This ability has had the trio previously described as “Louis C.K. meets The Beatles.” Though Columna admits there is definitely a comedic element to their work, it’s clear there is an important balance to Dear Me,’s songwriting.

Regarding this balance Sam, told me, “Oh man. Well when this comes up I always like to make it clear that we’re not Flight of the Concords or Axis of Awesome. We’re not a comedy band. We just sing songs with lyrics that are often blunt about social circumstances, and are sometimes funny, in a caustic, dark, Louis C.K. kind of a way. I actually didn’t really think of my songs as being particularly humorous until I started hearing people laughing during open mics. But I’ve always been a person who has found a lot of life to be depressing, or awkward, or uncomfortable, or shocking, or whatever, and I’ve always responded to those parts of life by laughing at them. I think Andrew is that way too. And since art is an outward expression of inward shit, it was inevitable that some of that would make it into the songs.”

“The News” is the first single from Present Perfect, Dear Me’s debut album. The record is a followup to the band’s three-song 2015 EP Name On a Page. The nine-song record was, in some ways, five years in the making.

Said Columna, “Present Perfect has lots of fingerprints on it. It was tracked either at Streetlight Audio or at Beyond the Infinite Multimedia, run by Dae Dupont, George Till, Quinn Blue and Leo Cashin. It was mixed and mastered entirely at Streetlight Audio, which is run by Tyler Paul Glasgow, Jack Roberts, and Jeff Hummel. Tyler Paul Glasgow produced and added some tasty slide guitar and synth layers on a few of the tracks. Elliott Cook played drums on any track with drums on it, and bass responsibilities were split between myself and Casey Cormier. That just leaves the core members of Dear Me,: Andrew and I both played guitar, Jamie played keys. Andrew and I split lead vocals on the album, and the songs were written by either me or Andrew, and arranged collectively by me, Andrew, Jamie, and whoever happened to be in the rhythm section at the time. Jamie mostly arranges all of our vocal harmonies, and we credit her with keeping us from sounding like a bag full of cats in a burning dumpster.”

When asked about whether Present Perfect is comprised more of old tunes the band has played over time, or new songs written just this year, Sam told me, “In some ways it’s like a greatest hits collection of a band no one knew about that had been skulking around in living rooms and cigar bars for five years and finally managed to stumble into a studio.”

More seriously, he added, “The vast majority of the songs are relatively recent, like written inside the last couple years. But something we really wanted to capture with the album was sort of the breadth of all the junk that we’ve kicked around over the last however many years. We wanted the album to capture everything we’ve been over the last five years, [and] I think it does that. Some of the tracks were multi-tracked in studio, some were tracked as full band performances with overdubs, and some were live acoustic trio tracks. That’s all the stuff we’ve been. And I think we managed to massage it into a mostly cohesive product. So I feel pretty dope about that.”

It’s this play between laughs and seriousness (and those same interplays throughout the band’s new record) that had me wondering who some of Sam’s influences are in the comedy and music realms.

“Beyond Louis C.K., I’m a fan of Mike Birbiglia and Dave Chappelle. I like storytellers. Obviously there’s innumerable musicians that I love, but my three desert island albums would probably be Abbey Road by the Beatles, Curse Your Branches by David Bazan, and Stadium Arcadium by Red Hot Chili Peppers.” he told me.

And local artists?

Danielle Ate the Sandwich is one of the best songwriters I’ve ever heard. Andy Sydow and I have peed in many backyards together. He’s my closest non-Jamie friend from CU Denver, and he got me a job teaching music. I really admire his musicianship, and his tenacity. He puts on a pretty sassy live show too. Corsicana went on tour with us last October, and together we discovered the healing properties of cayenne pepper. Ben has the voice of an angel and is irritatingly young. Andrew actually taught him to swim a billion years ago.”

After the release of Present Perfect, Dear Me, have a CD Release Show booked at Syntax on June 10th and are planning to tour around Colorado and the region. They also want to jump back in the studio.

Said Sam, “I feel a little bit like releasing this album was the top of a roller coaster, and the five years before that were the long slow ticking part while we climbed up. And hopefully from here it’s screaming and raising our hands in the air for awhile.”

Treehouse Sanctum Premiere New Music Video for "Chacala" - Watch

“Chalaca,” which premiered via Paste last month, holds particular significance for frontman Sam Rymer, who spent time in Chacala, Mexico building houses for local impoverished families and surfing.

“It was a trip of personal discovery,” said Sam, adding, “It was a profoundly spiritual experience.”

Treehouse Sanctum explored the visualization for the “Chacala” music video through illustrations that sync well with the audible journey of this tune. With sketches by Amy Koch Johnson and filming by Ben Fout, Rymer's trip comes to life through the color of Johnson’s drawings while the ¾ waltz timing of the tune keeps you moving from one picture to the next.

Said Rymer, “The focus of the song is a young man, in the sea, at night, far from the shore, and alone.”

Exclusive Premiere: Stream Ethan Griggs' Debut EP, 'Transient'

Born and raised in Colorado, Denver’s Ethan Griggs has been playing in the local music scene since he was just 15. The success of his first project, Youth In Conflict, propelled Griggs and his bandmates into a number of shows around the state, and even garnered the attention of Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic), who called Griggs’ work “instinctive”. After entering the Denver School of the Arts, Griggs turned his attention to Clusterfolk, an outfit of theatre punks and musicians that played music on just about any instrument and object they could find. Clusterfolk actually went on to play the Bluebird and the Gothic, and Isaac Slade (The Fray) once called their sound “drunk, but in the best way possible”. Most recently though, Griggs has been focusing on a solo release, which BolderBeat is stoked to premiere for you today:

Transient is five tracks of in-your-ear tastiness. Recorded DIY lo-fi in Griggs’ bedroom and basement over the past two years, Transient gives us a real look into what Griggs is capable of in his solo career. Griggs described the album as, “filtered through the psychedelic sounds of original groups like The Beatles… as well as the sludgy-neurosis of modern groups like Deerhunter and Tame Impala”. Still, it’s evident on Transient that Griggs has managed to create a work all his own, with a psych-mashup of buzzy guitar riffs, reverb-drenched vocals, powerful percussive builds, and songwriting that you find yourself listening to intently without even trying.

“I am so glad to finally share this piece of work,” said Griggs, “There’s a lot of my own personality and my own reality in this record, and I’m excited for people to get to know me better through it.”

Transient was mastered by Corban Roberts at Tessitura Studios, and though Griggs did everything else himself on this release, he does have a band for live performances. Known as Ethan Griggs + Sonder Ensemble, Griggs’ live group features Sam Beard on bass and Seth Cross on drums while Griggs takes on vocals, lead guitar, and piano.

Griggs managed to stretch Transient into almost 30 minutes in just five tunes, but you won’t even notice. “Transient”, the title track, opens the record with an instrumental build that slowly envelopes Griggs’ trancey vocals with a catchy, melodic chorus. From there, you’ll find yourself caught in the swells of his sounds on “High Tempered” and you’ll question whether or not “Snowsun” is a hidden track on Sung Tongs that you somehow missed. Though there a couple of rough vocal patches on “Mind Gardening Girl”, this track will still transport you into a world of warm 70s vibes that you’re not sure you want to leave. And “Sun Still Shines” feels like The Beach Boys are playing underwater somewhere at a party you’re wandering through while you drink rainbows and crush on your date from afar. Take the trip already.
