Denver's Major Glen Release Two New Singles, “Violent Streets” & “Weathervane"

Major Glen, the lo-fi/alt-punk rock trio from Glendale, have just dropped a couple of new singles, “Violent Streets” and “Weathervane.”

The first of many songs from Major Glen since 2018’s self-titled debut, the band will be releasing a new single each month from March to June, and then will be releasing the entire album on vinyl.

Says band member Barrett, “The nature of streaming has forced us to rethink how we submit our music to the public. The new single methodology seems to be working out better than just dropping an entire album and hoping for the best.”

Review: Lief Sjostrom's 'Impossible Parade' Focuses on Post-Rock Vibes in a Neo-Classical Fashion

The cello-wielding force of reckoning Lief Sjostrom has released a new EP Impossible Parade.

As with the growing body of work that is Lief Sjostrom, this EP sufficiently augments the sonic progress of his career. Almost like the next release of a trilogy or series, it makes you want to go back and hear the last pieces to fulfill the story and relive the experience again. However, Impossible Parade focuses more on the post-rock vibe in Sjostrom’s neo-classical fashion, with tracks that are laced with a bit more momentum and tension.

Impossible Parade is both canon and progressive to the tale Lief is weaving for us. It fits nicely in the sense of feeling like the composition of a somber and grieving movie or game. I have and continue to imagine the darker moments of Lord of the Rings, Vikings, Skyrim, and the Witcher series in comparison. In simpler terms, his songs have a stygian Celtic folk feel that resonates with an almost enchanted medieval era.

Greeley's Futurebabes Have Transformed Into DEBR4H

Out of the reformation of former Greeley synthpop band futurebabes, DEBR4H was conceived. The new band recently released their debut EP Taipei Rock City. Check it out below:

In regard to their recent transformation, the band had this to say: “Well gang, we’re doing it. It’s come time to retire the futurebabes name. We’ve taken it down a long road with many ups and downs and fought the good fight. But now it’s time for a restart. A time to let go of the past and look towards the future and that future is not forever anymore.”

With some similarities to their former sound in futurebabes (which you can find our review for here), DEBR4H continues the highly eclectic electronic trend with a heavy synthwave vibe. Their new record makes for very chill driving music, accompanied by a singing style similar to She Wants Revenge and Interpol.

Along for the ride in this reformation are Oliver and Jakob from Slow Caves, with Oliver taking the helm of the producer for the project as well. Nobide Chats with Us About Their New Single & What It Means to Be "Organic Electronica"

Nobide is a Boulder, CO based live electronic band who classify themselves enigmatically as “organic electronica.” Their new single “Wildin’ Out” was just released, so we decided to catch up with band founder Nick Vann to discuss their brand of music as well as what the future holds.

Nobide is an interesting name and doesn’t seem to hint at its meaning. Would you guys care to elaborate on your project name a bit?

The name Nobide originated in 2015 when I was reading an Eastern philosophy book. There was a chapter exploring what happens when we die, and a particularly poignant part of that suggested that as humans we shouldn't waste our time so that when we meet death we don't go full of regret. I wrote down in my journal ‘no biding time’ and the name sort of came to life. What's really cool and special to us is that Nobide isn't a word, so we get to totally shape and explore the concept and meaning.

What’s the origin tale of Nobide?

Nobide originated as my solo project in 2015. From inception, the focus has been on organic electronic music; walking the line between totally produced pieces and live recorded pieces. The fusion is where the magic happens; it's like you're human but not. Nobide continued to develop and expand into live performances as time moved forward. I was simultaneously studying at CU Boulder and created an independent study major called ‘sociomusicology’ which allowed for a more academic side of exploring with Nobide as well. For graduation, my thesis included the album Contrary To Popular Belief, a written exploration of the project, as well as a live performance of some of the songs. The thesis was the first time Nobide music was performed by a band, and within six months, the Nobide band as it lives now had settled into place. The members now include Nick Vann, Matt McElwain, Ted Kleist, and Tanner Fruit.

You classify yourselves as “organic electronica” and right out of the gate that sounds fun and interesting. Can you go into detail as to how you arrived at that classification and what that entails?

Organic electronic was kind of poking fun at Boulder's hyper-health conscious culture, but it really stuck and we think it's a great description of our sound. We're influenced by people like Lettuce, Snarky Puppy, Pretty Lights, Bassnectar, Bonobo, etc. and when describing their sound to others, ‘organic’ is often a term that pops up. We think it's a good description for our sound as we're very focused on bringing a sort of natural sound and texture to electronic music. The potentials of electronic music are incredible, but so much of it feels one-dimensional today. We're interested in maintaining a natural feel and sense of space/development in our recordings and live shows; not being tied to traditional instruments or to computers. It's an incredibly exciting place to be exploring. We can't wait to hear what we're making in two years, five years, ten years!

“Wildin’ Out” is a very eclectic mix of dance and live instrumentation - as could be suggested by your genre classification - and it makes me wonder, what is the writing process like for you guys? Do you start out all electronic and branch out to live instruments? Or go the live route and then add the electronic elements? Or something else altogether?

The writing process varies. As the band lineup still quite new, we don't have an established method of working. Most songs start as riffs or beats that I produce, then bring to the band. We're big fans of working out songs live. From the second we have an arrangement that's cohesive, we're playing it live and figuring out what works and what doesn't. It's a very iterative process. We'll write a new section, then discard it two weeks later after trying it out. We get together for practice and we'll jam one song for half an hour and find all sorts of new places to take it, and that's incredibly inspiring. As we move forward it seems everyone will be pretty involved with the production/writing processes. Matt and Ted are just learning to navigate the Ableton universe, so they'll be able to write more as well. What's especially killing about having an electronic heartbeat is that we can write wherever we are. We're heavily influenced by our travels and people we meet; to be able to put that right into sound is a huge opportunity for us.

Is “Wildin’ Out” a part of a full LP or EP, or is it specifically a single? Can we expect more to be released from Nobide soon?

Wildin' Out’ is just a single, but it's pretty definitive of the realm we're exploring. We do have several more releases slated for this year, and then LOTS for 2019. We're trying to be strategic about all of it and give each song/project the attention and care they deserve.

Looking at your past discography, it seems like you guys have been working hard for a few years on your craft. What’s in store for the future of Nobide?

The future of Nobide is really exciting. We really don't know what's going to happen, but we know we're on to something with this sound. We really just want to get deeper into exploring its potentials, possibilities, and crossovers with other art forms/mediums/artists. We're at a really exciting place as a band right now in that we're starting to get some attention, but we have no expectations yet. We've got a completely blank page we get to start with, which means we have lots of room to explore. At the end of the day, everybody wants more good music, and we want to be making some of the best organic electronic out there. So the immediate future for us looks like lots of time in the studio and lots of shows just working to be the best we can be.

Review: The UK's Arliston Release Debut EP 'Hawser'

UK-based Arliston has just released their debut EP Hawser October 5th. The EP embodies the dirge-like marriage between folk and hip-hop made popular by bands such as X Ambassadors, with nods to greats like Radiohead and The XX.

The band consists of George Hasbury (keys/guitar/backing vocals), Jordi Bosch (drums/synth/backing vocals) and Jack Ratcliffe (guitar/lead vocals); a group of East Londoners who initially got together in the flickering halogens of the London underground under the name “Hawser” and through a period of eight months of trials and fallout with former bandmates, eventually came out the other side as Arliston.

Although it was meant to be their band’s name, Arliston admits Hawser is an unwittingly fitting title for the EP because of the band’s connection to its roots; the rope which moors them to the past, but also pulls them forward, out of failure and (hopefully) into some degree of success.

Review: Major Glen Know Their Way Around a Hard Rock 90s Vibe & They Aren’t Ashamed to Rub It In Your Face

Glendale rock trio Major Glen seem to know their way around a hard rock 90s era vibe, and after releasing their debut album a few weeks back, they aren’t ashamed to rub it in everyone’s face.

What you may notice right out of the gate is these lo-fi alt/punk rockers have a ton of “sounds like” references, and as you go on through their music, the list just piles up. We have nods to The Violent Fems, The Pixies, The Wallflowers, and even a splash of Nirvana, not to mention some of their lyrical content, which lends itself to themes similar to Weezer’s Blue Album and Pearl Jam’s Ten. Now, normally, I would say all these similarities lean toward a lack of identity, but I am flabbergasted at how well Major Glen manages to make this cumulative 90s influence their own thing.

Unfortunately for us, these guys only have seven songs on this debut. Granted, it’s seven more than we had before, but not to worry. They are slated to begin recording their next batch of songs in January 2019 and in the meantime, are trying to make their rounds with some live performances in the Denver area, like the one below:

Review: Retrofette's New Single "Lover In Japan" Is a Tasty Summer Splash of Synthwave

Denver-based Retrofette are an electropop act with 80s era funk and a splash of synthwave. Their latest single, “Lover in Japan,” is due out just in time for summer. Check it out:

If you left it up to me to describe Retrofett’s sound, I would liken it to what might have happened if Broken Bells, Julian Casablancas of the Strokes, Prince, and David Bowie had the chance to record a song together. Is it that good?! Yes, yes it is.

Frontman Sean Culliton pretty much nailed the overall feel with his comments on the song when he told us, “Lyrically, (it’s) a melancholy note written to an estranged lover. But sonically, it's a sunny day at the beach with neon sunglasses and volleyball montages.”

The band is the byproduct of keyboardists Sean Culliton and Xavier Provencher's love for vintage synthesizers and sweaty dance floors. Joined by synth bassist Ben Weirich and drummer Dylan Johnson on stage, the quartet’s brand of 80s-tinged synthpop was born in March of 2016. Aside from this single, Retrofette released its debut three-song EP I Don’t Mind in 2016. They have also played BolderBeat’s Official Showcase at 2017’s Underground Music Showcase, been listed as one of 303 Magazine's top Denver acts to see, and selected as the “Best Pop” act of 2017 by Westword Magazine.

Compass & Cavern Release New Music Video For "Before it Begins" ...In Reverse

Denver-based pop/rock duo Compass & Cavern have been working hard on bringing you quality media since 2015, and their newly released video for “Before it Begins” doesn’t disappoint!

At first you may be thinking this video isn’t anything groundbreaking. I mean, sure the song is cool, but they’re just kind of singing and playing instruments. But then maybe it’ll dawn on you as it did for me, the ENTIRE video is put together in reverse and then reversed again to play forward! And then I really started looking closely: Is frontman Will Timbers playing that solo accurately backwards? Is synthesist Chris Frucci also playing the correct keys in reverse? It seems like it!

Though yes, this technique isn’t their original concept, you have to give them some big props for putting together such a well rehearsed production that most bands wouldn’t spend a quarter of the time on. And it’s especially cool when considering the real-time actions they have in the background of different scenes, like Chris spray painting walls while Will is singing and playing. Moments like these give you the unmistakable knowledge that the band didn’t edit the crap out of their footage to make these things work.

“Before it Begins” is the title track from Compass & Cavern’s 2017 full length release. As with a decent amount of their music, C&C show a definite influence from other hip-hop-meets-pop-rock acts with nods to bands like 311, Twenty One Pilots, and Fall Out Boy.

To say the least, the track is an exciting blast from the past, fortified with the tech of modern electronic music. It’s easy to call it new wave and synth pop on the surface, but there’s a lot more going on than can be gleaned on a first listen, such as the band’s nods to 80s greats like Prince and Duran Duran.

Rumours Follow successfully fuse elements of jazz, funk, synthpop, and alt-rock together, while maintaining a high-fidelity production value that definitely couldn’t be heard in the 80s when their brand of music inspiration was in its heyday. Yet regardless of era, this band is making 2018 a staple in their career. Just earlier this year, the band released their single “Spitting Rain."

Moonlight Bloom To Release New Record This Saturday (04/14)

Denver-based rock trio Moonlight Bloom is slated to release their sophomore EP Walking Trees Saturday, April 14th with a celebratory Denver show.

The band is a genre-blending, improv-embracing group weaving 60s and 70s psychedelia with modern sounds. Review: American Grizzly Release New Folk Rock Record Of Past, Present, & Future Sounds

American Grizzly, a Chicago-based folk rock unit, has released their new self-titled EP to a steadily growing fanbase.

To those of you familiar with The Lumineers, you’ll notice a good deal of homage paid by American Grizzly. But also in attendance are some mellow nods to Mumford & Sons and a slight helping of Neil Young. The band’s own take on their style is rock’n’roll influenced by all things past, present, and future: from tube-screaming noise-rock to the minimalist approach of rural American folk music.

The EP starts out with the calm folk ballad “Ex-Lovers,” picking out a steady warm chorded windchime of rhythm into the equally calm, but more minimalistic “Ain’t Whupped Me Yet.” Track three, “When Love is Found,” comes in with a southern flair and more upbeat feel. The more straightforward “Rock n’ Roll Cigarettes” lives up to its name with a very muted 40s era feel, yet boasts being the edgiest track. Finally, the EP closes out with the innocent feeling “From a Window,” which comes as a return to classic folk with a solid influence of blues.

Everett Bird Release Debut Single "Bucket Of Dark Meat"

Review: CITRA Serve Up Hard-Hitting Rock On New 'Mr. Copacetic' EP

Denver-based rockers CITRA just rolled out their Mr. Copacetic EP to the world. The first release since 2017’s single “Air,” CITRA isn’t pulling any punches with their new EP.

With this dosage, CITRA serve up some heavy-hitting rock with nods to the Foo Fighters and riffs reminiscent of Queens of the Stone Age respectively on “Static Erratic” and “Felt So Right.” Moving into track three “That’s What She Said,” the pace takes a small backstep as the song washes over in smokey bar ballad. “Grant My Wish” is a swinging return to some edgy rock while the EP wraps up with the fast paced and hard lined “R.Y.F.F.” According to the band, this music isn’t about any particular theme; however, with the current cultural climate, they couldn’t help but feel a social and political charge energizing their motivations.

CITRA have plans to tour with these new songs, adding to their already impressive collection of fan favorites like 2017’s “My Mind,” which already boasts over 10,000 plays on Spotify alone (no small feat for a homegrown band). Yet, they come out of the gates with a realistic attitude:

“We tracked drums at Evergroove Studio and the following week rented a mountain house to track the majority of the rest of the EP. Being fairly isolated was a great way for us to focus on the songs and on making them the best we could. We feel Mr. Copacetic finally represents our sound as it has developed since our formation a couple years ago.”

The Crowleys Release New Single "Pink Rainbows" From Upcoming EP

Just out, The Crowleys have released their first single “Pink Rainbows” from their upcoming EP.

If you could combine the mellower aspects of Rush with the retro psychedelic rock vibes of Tame Impala, you’d start to get an idea of what The Crowleys’ new single is about. Its clean electric guitars and synths form a bed of warm chords appropriate for its comfortable crooning of vocals to rest in.

“Pink Rainbows is the first song that we have recorded that we never played as a full band prior to hitting the studio. Cohen wrote the song awhile back and recorded a few of the parts, and then the rest of the band kind of wrote and recorded on the fly. It gave a lot of creative freedom and we believe it shows in the final product.”

Television Generation's 'Peel' Is About Your Lonely Life As A Millenial

Denver’s own apathetic indie-rockers Television Generation are back on the scene with the same attitude and a new EP.

The new music was released December 8th, 2017 through At Night Group. According to the band: “Peel is a 7-song excursion through the eyes of a Denverite's lonely millennial existence in an ever-gentrifying city.” Staying close to the same vein as their previous release (the four-song EP Fuchsia), TVG harnesses a raw energy brought to popularity by greats such as Nirvana (circa Bleach), The Strokes (circa Room on Fire), and indie greats Japandroids.

“Whatever” kicks off this release with a straightforward garage rock feel in a Dandy Warhols kind of way, highlighting the simple, yet, effective and easy to relate to lyrical content TVG presents to its listeners. “I’d Kill Myself But I Have to Go to Work Tomorrow” follows suit with an added level of dirty bass and a monologue-esque style of singing that reminded me of The Hives.

“The Model” holds coveted spot number three on the EP and presents the listener with what I interpreted as a sarcastic critique of the lifestyle of a fashion model, sung by bassist Katy Johnson. “My Favorite Drug” is a laid back punk vibe (if there is such a monster) alluding to a relationship being a favored drug. “Placeholder” comically comes in as an homage to its own name, but is noteworthy due to the song being uncharacteristic of the energy of the rest of the EP, and almost like an early Radiohead song in regard to its droning lethargy. “Going Blank Again” returns to a more traditional post-punk vibe, as well as being the longest track at over five minutes. “Thirteen” closes out the EP in emo-pop/punk style with a playful guitar lead while Will Hayden sings from the point of view of being a thirteen-year old.

Near the end of 2016, Scott Uhl, the man behind Spiral Cell, brought us his first full release with The Maze in the Tree Rings, a highly conceptual album blending the lines of progressive rock with contemporary video game soundtracks that had us questioning artificial intelligence versus reality. Now at the crest of 2018, he’s released the premiere video for the first song of from that record, aptly known as “Prologue.”

I won’t go into too much detail, but my first impressions of the video were that it was either: A) a post apocalyptic world with someone visiting from another planet perhaps to gain knowledge of Earth's demise, or B) someone surfacing from a sci-fi bunker after some cataclysmic world event. Either way, it’s mysterious, thrilling, and seems to fit well with the actual music.

I got a moment to catch up with Scott via a phone interview, and though he admits the video fits nicely into his conceptual creation for The Maze in the Tree Rings, he also wasn’t about to spoil my own interpretations of his music and the video. Spiral Cell is highly conceptual through and through, and though Scott admits he has a vision for what the story of the video is, he stands true on the ideal that “art is in the eye of the beholder,” which means he wants us to have the freedom to take from what he creates instead of telling us what Spiral Cell is fully about.

What Scott was willing to tell us about Spiral Cell and the video for “Prologue” without spoiling any surprises were some behind-the-scenes details:

First and foremost, the same people involved in the recording of the music are featured in the video. Scott’s wife Danielle, who is featured singing on some tracks of his last record, was the makeup designer and a body double; the “woman” creature is Mackenzie Beyer, who was the voice of “the guide” on several tracks;  and of course, Scott himself is the hazmat suit-wearing, flashlight-wielding explorer.

Scott also shared that though the video was filmed on three different locations on three different nights, each night of filming, observers called the police to the film scene due to the creepy nature of him walking around with a flashlight and hazmat suit and because the fog machines used were mistaken for fires. Yet, he said in each situation the police allowed them to continue their production and wished him well in its completion.

One of my favorite behind-the-scene hints came up when I asked Scott about how he was structuring “Prologue” into the storyline of the The Maze in the Tree Rings concept. The end of the video seems open-ended, as if it could be a finality or just the beginning, and “Prologue” in name and as the first song on the album begs the question: Is it the actual beginning, or is he telling a story in reverse Tarantino-fashion? Scott of course was enigmatic about all of it, but informed me that “Prologue” is not necessarily the beginning nor end of the story. “There are some subtle hints in the actual song that allude to where in the story ‘Prologue’ actually falls,” Scott told me, but he wants to leave it up to the listener to decide. Challenge accepted!

Spiral Cell may also have more for us on the horizon. “Though I wish I could make a video for every song, that’s not likely within my budget, but there will be more,” Scott said. He’s already planning a live performance video for one of the songs, but does not have a date set for its release.

Premiere: Indigenous Robot Take You To Space With "One World"

Denver’s Indigenous Robot are not your run-of-the-mill “out there” sort of band. Instead, they’re more a culmination of "out there" ideals ranging from hints of indie legends The Flaming Lips to psychedelic rock legends The Doors. Even better, they just released a video that sums up their artistry for their latest song “One World.” Check it out:

As you can see, Indigenous Robot doesn’t hesitate to put it all out there. Their video (which looks to be filmed at none other than Colorado Springs' own Garden of the Gods) highlights a retro Star Trek vibe while managing to include some modern day video tech, which is fitting because a lot about Indigenous Robot and their sound is modernly retro. The video has already won "Outstanding Music Video" by Zed Fest Film Festival

Regarding their song “One World,” the band does well both grounding the listener with their gritty dirge-like bass and guitar while also allowing the mind to wander with shimmering vocal effects over calm singing and synths. Interestingly enough, the band’s ability to create an almost mundane, yet groove-laden arrangement manages to hook the listener and leaves a haunting reverie throughout the experience. It reminds me a great deal of some of Queens of the Stone Age’s deeper cuts and fan favorites “I Think I Lost My Headache” and “Gonna Leave You”.

Optycnerd & Play Pat Join Forces For 'Nonfiction' EP

Denver’s latest collaboration EP Nonfiction brings OptycNerd and Play Pat together with four tracks that are certain to get some winter dance parties grooving. Check it out:

OptycNerd is an electronic hip-hop/pop duo based in Denver. After meeting at a party and realizing they both had the same first name, Chris Kimmel and Chris Scott knew immediately that they had to form a group. Over the past few years, the Chris' have been crafting their sound and building up their body of work, including their released December 3rd single “Apollo” which is currently in the top 10 running for 93.3 KTCL’s Hometown for the Holidays - and you can vote on until December 12th!

Play Pat is an indie hip-hop artist with a great deal of work under his belt, including his most recent November 2017 release “Uber to Space”. Although he seems to keep his personal information under the radar, Play Pat has a solid SoundCloud following, including multiple tracks with over 10k+ plays- no small feat!

With their Nonfiction collaboration, both artists bring a solid hip-hop/rap effort to the table, featuring sounds reminiscent to Disclosure, Macklemore, and even nods to artists like Kendrick Lamar on their track “Photoshoot”. Yet, this isn’t the first collaboration these artists have had together, and likely it won’t be their last. Back in September, they combined their powers for the first time on the single “PM AM,” a far more pop/hip-hop oriented track.

The Midnight Club Release Debut Single "Close Your Eyes" On Harbor Records

The Midnight Club has released their debut single with Harbour Records, “Close Your Eyes,” and have a slated headlining release show at the end of November. Check out their single below:

You may recall hearing about The Midnight Club in 2016 when they won the coveted opening slot for Denver’s “Big Gig,” hosted by alternative station KTCL 93.3. But also notable is this Denver-based band being comprised of high school students Owen Coleman, Harry Springer, Miles Bragg, and Sean McCarthy. These young guys have been working the Denver scene since 2015.

The band's single has a considerable similarity to Panic! at the Disco (circa 2008’s Pretty. Odd. album), with the 1970’s era rock’n’roll mixed with synthetic orchestrations and thick vocal arrangements. The track, mixed by Mark Needham (The Killers, Imagine Dragons, Walk The Moon), has solid production quality and highlights the band’s indie/rock vibe without being overly commercial.

Psych Rock & Multimedia Project King Eddie To Release New Record 'Holographic Universe'

King Eddie, a denver-based psychedelic rock and VR multimedia project, is preparing to release their second full-length album, Holographic Universe, this Friday, November 17th.

Holographic Universe was recorded at Moon Magnet Studios in Denver and marks the band’s first full length release since 2015’s King Eddie (self-titled) release.

The band’s charge, led by Jay Mars (guitar and vocals), is further filled out by guitarist Benjamin Buttice, bassist Velvet Adams, and drummer Linton Wright. King Eddie’s sound is reminiscent of some of the more lo-fi Britpop concepts of the late 70’s mixed with perhaps a touch of Tame Impala’s signature modern version of psychedelic rock.

Regarding what Holographic Universe represents, singer and guitarist Jay Mars told BolderBeat: “[The record] is a concept album about reconciling human vulnerability and the depth of your own experience with what quantum science and ancient religions tells us is true- ‘reality’ is an illusion. It's loosely based around virtual reality and the futurism of Philip K Dick and Westworld.”

The Holographic Universe release party will feature Kyle Emerson, Panther Martin, and DeCollage (DJ set), along with live virtual reality visuals from the DenVR collective.
