Opening night at Sasquatch was full of stage dives and more.
Psychedelic R&B four-piece Unknown Mortal Orchestra were one of the first bands to grace the Bigfoot stage at Sasquatch last night. The Portland-based group played to a full crowd right before sunset, a prime slot for the night’s lineup, which also included appearance across the festival by Alina Baraz, A$AP Rocky, Todd Terje, Wolf Alice, and Yeesayer.
With a healthy mix of old and new songs, UMO’s hit single “Multi-Love” had people moving. Shortly afterward, frontman Ruban Neilson jumped off the stage and into the crowd to be carried around while singing. His stage dive was the perfect start to the festival weekend.
As Neilson was passed around, it was evident: that palpable energy that resonates between stages at The Gorge was beginning. Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s sound was perfect, and it carried off into the beautiful setting surrounding us.

The energy continued to build when Vince Staples, a high-energy MC from Long Beach, CA took the stage. Staples has taken the national music scene by storm in recent months for his 2015 release Summertime ‘06. As he started in on his 20-song release, the crowd was enthusiastic. He was the perfect act to welcome in the night.
